Introducing Manfred (aka Freddie)... a shaded-red short-haired minature dachshund.

He's 5 months old and has more character than you could shake a very large stick at... I had him checked out by the vet this morning and he's in great shape. He also comes with one of the most impressive pedigree certificates the vet has ever seen (all his parents and ancestors are/were show-winners).

The missus doesn't know anything about him yet (although she is desperate for a puppy and loves the idea of a dachshund)... her b'day is Wednesday, so she's going the get one hell of a pressie!

Re. his name... it comes from Manfred von Richthofen (the Red Baron) who was my great great uncle... an ideal name for a characterful little (red) German dog.

Just gotta get the little weasel fully trained now!

He looks great thumbup Should be a super little dog. How come you didn't have him younger? may just make the training a bit harder. Your wife is going to love him smile

Good name choice

Good name choice
he came from a show breeder in Dover (ie. not someone who breeds to sell puppies, but someone who breeds purely to get champion dogs). his pedigree certificate is amazing... his parents, grand-parents, great-grand-parents etc were all show-winning dogs. his breeder only let him go to me (and also explaining why i have him at 5 months rather than 8-10 weeks which is the usual age to take a puppy) as once he grew a bit, his front feet are ever so slightly pointed outwards. this means that he won't be a show-winner, so there was little point in keeping him, other than as a pet.

in view of the above, he was taken to the vet this morning for a thorough examination (my purchase contract allowed me to return him should i have any concerns) which he passed with flying colours.

just gotta sort out his insurance now (he came with 4 week kennel club cover)... i'm thinking Petplan lifetime cover... not cheap, but should cover all bases.

Can't usually go wrong with pet plan lifecover. His old owners loss, your gain (personally I think pup gains as well, life as a show dog or life as a carefree pet hmm....smile)

lovely looking pup
I love the dachs'ies. Have been watching Sarah Beeneys restoration show on telly and love it when you get shots of her little min. red dachs too.
They do look like they have a lot of character for thier size etc.

I went for petplan insurance with my dog years ago, and then swapped to pet protect (a sister company of theirs - they are good but you pay a higher excess i think as well as a percentage of the vet bill. this may be now due to my dogs age however).

hope the training goes well, as i hate seeing small and minature breeds with no manners or training, when they can do so well with a bit of time spent on this.

Such cute dogs.

You've got a rather awesome pedigree too, with that kind of relative.

He's lovely!
How are you going to keep him a surprise until Wednesday though? Or is he away from home at present?

Gorgeous little doggie! Your OH will be really pleased. smile

We have a dachshund at our training classes. His little legs are so short that it's quite funny to watch him. "Wolfie, sit! Wolfie, down!" and the rest of us stand there wondering whether he's actually moved at all. hehe

he was staying at my parents place, but he moved in with me last night as my parents' whippet began to have a nervous breakdown as she thought she was being replaced.

the missus hasn't been home the past couple of nights, but is back tonight, so she will see him for the first time.

last night was fun...

i've discovered that he doesn't like being left alone (what puppy does), although having barked on an off for about 30 mins, he then was quite right through to 7:30am this morning...

he is also NOT in the slightest house trained (despite what his breeder assured me). He makes a valiant effort to do his business on newspaper, but often this means crouching over the newspaper with his bum hanging off the end. he isn't used to the outdoors, so before we can even hope to get him trained, he needs to feel comfortable outside.

i need to buy some doggy-steps to stop him from throwing him off the sofa in the living room (which will knacker his back). i have absolutely no idea how he managed to get up there to begin with!

he smells... not sure i can do much about that... i'm used to my parents' whippet which doesn't smell at all. he just smells like a dog... maybe time for a bath with some johnson & johnson baby shampoo!

he's scared of people and cars... will make living in town good fun, but lots of walks should get him used to it slowly. it's hilarious watching him lie down on the ground whenever a car goes past or a person approaches. after they pass, he gets back up and carries on trotting along.

i'm less than 24hrs in and i'm knackered already!

Poor pup, he's going to be a challenge no doubt there (t'was what I was fearing when you said he was 5 months and still with the breeder) but hopefully with a lot of patience, slow introductions to all things new and positive rewards he'll get there. Good luck with the little fella.

Ps get him used to toileting in garden asap, try and get him off newspaper esp as he's a bit older, can be a nasty habit to break otherwise.

I like him.

Do not let Wolfgang and Wilhelm (& Parakitamol) see him though.

How did the surprise go down with the Mrs?
