I would not ever consider a lab as a house dog, they need lots of outdoor exercise, not the right dog to be kept in...

Where about a in the country are you looking to buy?

And labs make great house dogs as long as they get plenty of walks and the freedom to run around off lead.

Thanks for the replies. I am based in Nottinghamshire. The dog will have plenty of exercise. When i say 'house dog' i mean not a working dog.

Get the hip scores for both parents - unfortunately joint problems can be rife in non-working dogs.

If your parents can spare the time to walk it enough, I would look for a working dog as they tend to have better hip scores. We have a Drakeshead pup - very good lineage which helps. You probably don't need full Drakeshead but they have links on their website to breeders who have used the Drakeshead studs - may be someone local?

If your parents have time, why not look at working the dog - to me watching my dogs work well, and doing what they are bred to do, gives me a massive buzz.

Drakeshead
Thank's for the reply smile. A quick Google brought up http://drakeshead.com/puppies.asp . Some interesting info on there. My parents are certainly in no rush, so i will probably ring a few breeders and get some info on their breed, and future litters.

I spoke to one breeder of working dogs last night who advised on a dog, rather than a bh as a family pet (non-working). My parents have always had bhes, and speaking to them (parents) this morning, a golden or chocolate bh is still the preferred requirement.

eta banghead how do you say bh without being censored hehe

looking at Murph's pedigree, he has Drakeshead all over the place...and Glenbriar

Going back the 5 Generations on his KC cert, he has about 8 Drakeshead dogs, closest was his dad's dad - FT Champ Haretor mark of Drakeshead, sounds impressive which makes it all the more hilarious, that coming from a long line of champion gundogs, Murph when he is outside the house, is afraid of his own shadow. Inside the house, he'll have your bloody arm off if you try and post anything through the letterbox.

Not got Charlie's to hand so can't say...

I would say so long as they get plenty of exercise and are kept mentally stimulated, Labs make a good house dog. Cmplete tapheads as pups, but faithful as anything and so loving. After the boss died,i swore i'd not get another lab as they are a handful, but wouldn't swap Charlie bear for anything.

Not sure on the dog vs bh debate - we've always had girls, and they 'seem' to be a calmer temperament than the boys that they work with, but its probably more to do with the training than anything else.

Our pup's dad is Greenbriar Viper of Drakeshead - so we've got a mix of the two as well! To be honest, you can tell the quality in the breeding from early on - she's an incredibly bright dog, and loves to retrieve. Also seems perfectly content to sit and watch her mum, with pure adoration in her eyes. Not quite so well behaved for her dad though - they do say a dog can only have one master!
