A month or so ago I was in our utility room getting something out of the freezer when I thought I saw an object shoot across the floor - well the light wasn't very good so I put it down to my imagination.
Then last Friday evening I was sat watching telly and there it was - the patter of tiny rodent feet, bold as you like out from under the gas fire (where there used to be a boiler behind it, but is now an empty space). Now I find the things quite cute, but my 89-year-old disabled mother, who lives with me, doesn't like the idea one bit! I explained to her that as she's 5 foot 4 and he's two inches long, to him she would appear over 150 feet tall but this failed to impress her for some reason.

So off to the hardware shop Saturday and bought a set of four moustraps for 79p! Chocolate is the bait of choice I'm told and the first two traps went down on either side of the fireplace. Well the chocolate has gone but that's about it.

But I'd bought some poison as well - further outlay, £3.80 - so Monday that went down too. I'm reluctant to murder Suggs, as we've christened him, but the aged parent wants rid so needs must. I filled the little plastic tray with the blue pellets and left it under the gas fire. Within 15 minutes, rustling sounds announced his arrival and within another 15 minutes he'd emptied it. This scenario was repeated 3 tines Monday evening - he can't get enough of it!

Which is all very well but he's still not dead yet (some wag at work said, if he loves it so much, why not put the poison on the traps?).

Anyone else got any mouse stories? What worked for you and what didn't?

Nothing other than the cats bringing them in, and it's always been pretty easy to just catch them in a tin and re-release them. Next time you see him why don't you just trap him in that room, shuffle some furniture around and pop him outside? I wouldn't use poison or traps, but then I am soft. smile

my house in the uk used to get invaded by mice every winter. i love mice having had many pet ones as a kid, but having your alarm cables chewed through at 3am can change your attitude about cohabiting with them.

humane traps simply do not work. i found the best way to rid yourself of them is to use to old style wooden traps and bait them with reeses nutrageous or snickers. mice love peanut/choc and it it sticky enough that they can't simply steal it from the trap.

you must check regularly for dead ones as the others seems to get wise to what a trap is. i only caught one live, and repatriated him to the park.
