Strange fish thing (to a beginner anyway)
Discussion
40 litre aquarium, 2 platys and 3 Zebra Danios
The Platys are I think bro & sis.
Please stick with this.
The male was pestering the female chasing here everywhere until she hid behind anything, usually the heater, filter or thermometer. Seemed terrified or fed up. Every time she came out, it was high speed chase, Bullit style.
The follow up was, I bought a breeder tank to drop into the aquarium to separate them, but before doing so, I realised that when the light was off they were actually quite good friends, it was just when the light was on that she was chased & hid.
Anyway dropped the breeder tank in and whilst I wanted to get the male in, she came out and I dropped her in instead. Now she's trying to get out (unsuprisingly) and he's waiting for her....
She has also tried to rub herself up along the grid in the tank (where the babies would have dropped) so I have removed this.
At least I know she is getting some food, I was beginning to doubt it as she seems to be slimming..
Is the male half blind and needs the light, is she afraid of the light, is it a case of can't live with, can't live without...?
Beats me

Yep. 1 male to 2 or 3 males is ideal. Better still, take the female back and just get males. If I were you (given that your tank isn't really big enough for danio's, and they should be kept in groups of 6) I'd take the female and the danio's back and replace them with a couple of males. Or 6 ember tetras.
Yes agreed but unfortunately the lady passed away yesterday morning
The sellers ( a well respected and regularly praised garden/aquatic centre in North Yorkshire) agreed with your and my own diagnosis, that the male was harrassing the female and we should have had two females to one male. Strange they didn't suggest that when we bought them in November!!
The situation only started a week or so ago though.
Anyway treated the water for white spot etc just in case, as there was a (very small) white mark on her and a very small something, on the fin of the male. Nothing on the danios that I can see but they are a bit fast....
Watching for developments now, the male is going back and forth looking for her.
