My cat doesn't like snow!
Discussion
Well, she went out this morning so I thought she was OK with 5" of snow.
But by late afternoon she was making funny noises and behaving slightly oddly. I opened the back door - not interested. I opened the front door and made encouraging noises. Not interested. Did this several times but cat didn't even go close. Didn't want to throw her out against her will so went up and had a bath.
Came down to find a pile of turds on the carpet!
So next time, funny noises = cat goes out whether she likes it or not!

Ours went out (did the whole flicking the paw thing though) first thing for half an hour, came in and recharged, then went back out for another hour this evening.
Time for you to get a litter box?

'Flicking paw thing'
Mine's 7 this year, and has seen the last two years of proper deep stuff. So is unfazed now, although I admit she doesn't go out 'roaming' in the snow, favouring staying in sleeping with only essential 'toilet breaks' outside!
She'll get used to it I'm sure.
Only one of our seven has spent any time outside today but that's quite usual for him, he takes no notice of massive downpours and comes in soaking wet and covered in mud. They've all been using the litter trays, apart from Abby who did go outside briefly. We thought she'd done her business but no, she crapped in the porch!

OP surely for the odd occasion like today a litter tray would be kinder.
Your cat was obviously distressed and was trying to avoid toileting indoors but in the end was desperate and was forced to make a mess, this was really not nice for your cat (or you!)
Cat pads are rarely suitably hardened (unless they live out in all weathers normally) for this extreme of weather which occurs for just a few days in this country so it really isn't that surprising when many object to being forced into it!

I suspected she might be in some kind of pain, but as she's gone outside to dump every day for the last five years, and coped fine in last years' snow, and and went out in the snow this morning, I had ruled out toileting as a reason. Logical but wrong as it turned out.Your cat was obviously distressed and was trying to avoid toileting indoors but in the end was desperate and was forced to make a mess, this was really not nice for your cat (or you!)
I'm not going the litter tray route partly for the reason already mentioned, but also because I don't want her to get 'lazy' and become dependent on it. I'll be forewarned tomorrow though; she may get cold feet but snow doesn't hurt.
My 2 seem to have completely forgotten the last 2 years' snow
Lots of flicking paws, lots of sitting down in the snow to lick snow off paws, closely followed by having to then lick thei snow off their bums
They're both quite happy to be out in it, but they're happier inside with the central heating on!

My older cat hates the snow, I put that down to here living wild before I got her but at least she will go out to go to the toilet. My younger and stupider one loves it. The first time he was old enough to be let out was when it was snowy and he gets massively excited by it. I think he reckons its normal for the world to be white and cold, and the rest of the year is wrong. If you throw a snowball he will spend minutes batting it about until it breaks, then he will come back and hassle you until he gets another one.
The only problem is that because he like it so much he won't come in at night.

What's strange about that? A Cat flap gives them independence during the day but they all come in at night and stay in their assigned rooms, the flap is locked when we go up to bed.
My cat has never been phased by anything, from taking food from babies to me bringing home a Lab puppy and then a scatty Border Collie X.
This is the roof of my barn - she uses a six foot fence to jump from up on to here and then in through the bathroom window, balancing on the bathroom ledge meowing until someone lets her in

And this is her wanting to go out on Saturday night not knowing its been snowing for five hours...

I don't want to seem a nob or anything so please don't take it that way but I was expecting something funny in that video, or exciting, well anything tbh not just a door opening and a cat walking out.
You don't think that a cat having a snowball fight with a robin is funny?Gassing Station | All Creatures Great & Small | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
