Help and advice needed.
The OH treated herself to a new addition last October of a cute little girl called Megan.
She is a Bassett hound with all the bounce and bubbly personality as anything you could ever imagine.
Just recently we have started to catch her eating her poo, we got some tablets to add to food that is supposed to make it taste awful and put her off, doesn't work.
We have read all sorts regarding, pineapple, lack of d1 etc...
We would go to the vets but it's seems to be more of an attention seeking thing rather than it being a hunger or bad habit.
Has anyone got any ideas what we could do to stop this.
We also have a chocky lab that has no interest in this habit and I have a sneaky feeling that she just looks at Megan with disgust.
Any and all advice is very much welcome as I really don't want to smell her breath anymore as it makes me want to vomit.
Thanks
Chris.

Both things, dog eating poo and the cat peeing on bed can both be psycological issues. Have there been any stressful changes in the home environment?
ALso is the dog eatign own poo or others? It can be due to the diet lacking stuff

This kind of thing comes up regularly on PH and it puts me off owning a dog.

No changes of any significance, food is james wellbeloved for puppy and correct amount.
Haven't given any of extras as don't want to over feed her.
Would adding a few raw veggies like carrots and green beans help?
She gets plenty of exercise and is very active.

Relaxing on the dog couch.

This is called Pica.
You could try picking it up and disposing of it straight away !!

We had a puppy who used to eat his own poo he grew out of it thankfully. He then moved on to eating slugs and I know this can give them a heart problem. I put some very hot chilli sauce on a couple of slugs in the garden and waited. Strangely he only ate one or two after that.

Result !!!

Mine did that and J Welbeloved food just made things worse (its well over hyped IMO)

Pro plan from the vets did the trick withing 3 days.

I was led to believe that the dogs who do this are simply hungry.

We upped the daily food allowance for our GSD by 1/3 and it stopped pretty quickly. As someone said above though, farm animal poo must be extra tasty - she would race ahead to gobble a mouthful of cowpat or horse droppings before we caught her to stop her hehe

Mine has eaten 1 dog/fox poo but now stays away from it, she wont even pick up her ball if has landed near some. A number of times she has grabbed a mouthful of horse poo on walks. She only likes the really fresh stuff.

Maybe try changing the food. I had mine on Wellbeloved and all it did was give her runny poo so she probably was not getting the proper nutrients. As soon as I switched to Arden Grange she has been fine.

Some dogs just do this! What is disgusting to us, doesn't seem to be for them. Nothing has worked to put mine off, just have to keep a close eye on her. Just make sure the dog is wormed regularly

My dog used to do this as a youngster....

Spoke to my vet, and she said, put a chunk of pineapple in with his food... So we did, and it workedsmile

Apparantly, the pineapple, makes the poo undesirable to the dog..... Go figure, but it definitely worked for ussmile

Nothing of any significance to add, other than this picture I saw earlier, which the thread title immediately reminded me of:

Our beagle basset cross does it. She is 18 months old now. We were told by our vet that it is a habit that puppies can pick up off their mother, as when a mother is nursing puppies the mother does it to keep the nest 'clean'. We are trying cleaning up straight away and trying to distract her from doing it. Fingers crossed it seems to be improving.

This is what i got told when i asked. Along with maybe the food isnt getting digested fully so the poop is still like food.

My puppy is also on JWB food and does the same. Im thinking maybe its time to change food see how that goes.

This has worked for over a week now. thumbup
It's funny watching her take off the pineapple eat all her food then finish with the pineapple.
Great advice thanks.

Only had this once - he'd had to poo in the rear garden . Not a thing he likes to do . Suspect he's been trained not to (and rather than be embarressed ,he'd eaten it),and he won't out of love poo in garden . He's never done it since - so I accept this as his excuse . He's an old dog, but he's been trained too well . Can't help on this one - but perhaps something to make it less appealing- like pepper / antimate might help .
