Hi all, I've just noticed my dog has got one cracked paw,he's had a crack line in it for along time but has become sore due to walking in the snow and ice. Could anyone recommend a good way to treat this, any advice would be appreciated .

Use Hibiscrub to clean the cut, then perhaps (ideally) a sock/dog boot to keep it clean..

I am sure Bex will be along with vet nurse advice on how to care for this properly.

Recommend the socks, cracks in paws is mainly caused by the salt and grit at this time of year as most people use it for their drives and paths and then let the dog out to roam in the garden.
Try to avoiding path walking and walk them on grass as much as possible.

i used these when my dog had a sore paw. they arent in the least bulky and dont interfere with how the dog feels the ground. they are cheap and easy to use.

I wish paw boots would stay on though - the Springer had the same problem a couple of winters back.

Once they heal, get some "Tuff Foot" (I think it's called that) - it's what marathon runners use and it hardens the dogs paws a little so not so prone to cracking, especially good for the younger dog where the pads are soft.

Came recommended by a rescue centre, but interested in Bex's thoughts on that.

Thankyou everyone for the replies,I do use hibiscrub and after the tuff foot suggestion I had a look on the web and came across mushers secret.
Ive never known a bigger pansy, you would think my little boy was made out of china but he has just turned 1 and weighs 60kgs.

The paws boots stayed put on my dog. maybe your were too large, they should be a really snug fit.

In fairness, it was a determined Spaniel that helped it come off!

Similar to when he had a cut stapled and wrapped in that sticky bandage stuff (vet-wrap) - added a kids sock to make it harder to get to and he still managed to remove the whole lot overnight.

My Wiem' unwrapped his bandaged foot when he was a pup. Unfortunatly for him though, he wound the bandage around his muzzle in the process, where it stayed until I found him looking sorry for him self.... He's never messed with a banbage since!

laugh

The Springer got his off in one piece and was merrily chewing away at one of the two staples...a return visit to the Vets and after a second wrap with the same result, it was thought best to remove the remaining staple and let it heal that way. Springer wasn't impressed with the extended period of on-lead walking only though!
