My wife is 25 weeks pregnant with a decent bump. Recently our 11 month Spaniel has become very soft and attentive around my wife. I am the pack leader still but during the last few weeks the dog seems more focussed on her. Curls up next to her not me; sits there staring at her, that sort of thing.

Is there anything in this or are we mad?

Probably. She'll no doubt smell "pregnanty" to him.

Yes they seem to just know - maybe she just smells slightly different now.

We had a young Akita who just changed completely behaviour wise when my wife became pregnant.

A friend of mine had a rottie while she was pregnant and I remember her telling me that she (the dog) had become very clingy and protective towards her, and would not leave her alone! to the point of annoying! haha The dog used to sit with its head on her bump and follow her about like her shadow.

I remember at the time googling this and there is alot of similar stories out there so I think there is definately something in it!

and Congrats!

Your dog will have known your wife was pregnant before she did.

She (the dog) sleeps in the most awkward position but with her head on the bump!

We went to a friends house at the weekend, about 8 of us sat round talking and their cat jumps up on my wife and sleeps on her bump!

I think they know.

A cat would have made a skin suit out of her by now.

rofl...I'd forgotten all about that.

Maybe he's rooting for a fresh meat pie in nine months... I deleted that because of bad taste...No, I mean......oh, bugger it

Both my Dog and Cat got very clingy and more close to me all the time when i was preggers. They were great company on those days where i felt really rough! See the pic!
The cat would love to sit on my bump and she also did loads of kneading etc tryign to get to my boobs! LOL

They are both great with the new baby now too, which is great.

I wonder if there's any connection between this phenomenon and Feliway? Must be pheromones or hormones or summink.

That cat's not cuddling you. You're in her seat.

I'm not a doggy expert, but I've had dogs for years. They pick up on things we don't know about. Last time Mrs went in -our dog didn't know, but when pram arrived ,she started to get moodey. When our lad arrived - she got protective - she sat outside his room .He grew up with her looking after him - she sat on the outside of the sofa ,in case he got too close to the edge. He could do no wrong .
Now fast forwrd from 1983, to 2011- and another dog - an old Cairn , and my grandson . We got the dog( as a rescue)a week after GS was born . Both ,just get on as if they're meant to ..........
Bit O/T - but very close to what happens .
