Mr Jasper has had his annual visit to the vets, and he is starting to put on weight !

Vet advised we cut his food back to one pouch (wet) per day, and when the weather is warmer and he is outside more often put it back up to two pouches per day.

He always has dry stuff to nibble on, but on one pouch a day he is asking for some more grub.

Whats the consensus on the correct amount to feed him without ending up with a 'Bagpuss' style tummy ??

We don't want him to get diabetes in later life.

1/2 a tin of Whiskers a day is what our Jasper gets.
No podge and he seems happy with that.

approx 1/3 tin whiskas meat (couple spoons in morning and couple at night - tin does 2/3 days) and dried food in afternoon when he meows for it! also gets the odd treat, and he is a nice weight on that.

I feed pet mince and chicken mince and chicken wings... But I'd have thought half a tin a day for a cat would be enough.. Is it a lazy moggy??

Very easy to overfeed dry food.

Our fat bd disagrees, and spends hours yowling outside my office door for MORE FOOD.

Blimey. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Three pouches a day here. And they are pretty skinny both of them. All wormed up and everything. Cost a bloody fortune these days doesn't it. They are pretty active cats though.

I reckon a 'pouch' is the equivalent to approx 1/3 (Large) tin of cat food, so that is in line with the majority of responses here.

He is now lounging on Mrs Bombs lap, so i can only assume he has had his fill.thumbup

Reduce the dry and put the wet upto 1.5 sachets. Much easier to overfeed dry food and grazers of dry food can often end up eating too much.

If on dry alone average cat needs no more than 60g a day. Often less.

Caspar has 3 pouches a day but rarely finishes them, he is also on dental dry food as the vet wants him to lose a kilo but as he had 3 teeth out on Wednesday (£385. ouch) he can only have soft food for a week

A pouch each for breakfast and a pouch each for dinner.

And a bowl of dry to share overnight - he's 200g over his ideal weight and she is spot on according to our vet last weekend.

Dental dry food is notorious for causing weight gain (well its notorious in veterinary circles!!) so I'll be stunned if you get him to lose weight esp if you also feed up to 3 sachets a day.

WTF???!!!!??

Dexter eats 5 pouches a day!!!! Yes thats half a box of Felix kitten pouches every day. And he gets err between meal "supplements" of Tesco chewy sticks and any spare meaty bits off my plate in the evening.

He sits beside my dining chair staring at me like a soppy dog...

He's 9 1/2 months old now and weighs 6kg. You can count his ribs under his fur and he doesn't have even the slightest podge. Honest to God I don't know where he puts it all. He costs us an arm and a leg.

He is one greedy mofo! And yes he is perfectly healthy. When we got him at 3 months old the girl who's cat mothered them (I don't want to call her a breeder) said he and his brother were greedy wee stes from the off.

He won't even look at dried food, and he never gets the same flavour of pouch twice in the same day smile

Oh, and he's already pulled the curtains, the pole and the wall fixings down in one room biglaugh

Is he a Maine Coon? He's gorgeous.

Just make sure he is on a good food as that big so young can be a strain on growing joints.

He is lovely.

Thank you both Ace-T and BexVN smile

Yes he's a Maine Coon. Bex, I worry about him when he jumps off the table or the worktops. He lands with such a thud on the floor, I cringe when I think what that is doing to his shoulder joints frown

I have a female version almost 6kg (quite big for a girl) and she does the same smile.

My friend breeds them. She currently has a 14mth old male who weighs in at 10kg and still growing.

I'd love a male Maine one day.

How much does she weigh compared to what she should weigh. It's likely she should prob not get more than 20g of the Hills light, poss 25g max and half tin wet food. (though she may disagree!)
