We have a Springer who is now 10 weeks old and since he had his first injections he's had diarrhea, he has been fed Eukenuba which is what he was raised on from being weaned. I've been adding rice to try and solid him up but with no luck so far.
Took him to the vets today for his 2nd injections which have been put off until next Monday and we have worming powders to give him for the next 3 days. He's not put enough weight on although he has grown but he is painfully thin which he shouldn't be. The vets did hint at maybe he was wheat intolerant as Eukenuba is a wheat based food.
He is fine in himself and very happy. And currently on a mixture of plain scrambled egg, rice and chicken.
My question is as I would like to wean him off the Eukenuba and get him onto something else. As we have a Bernese coming on Friday I would really like to get them both onto the same dried food. I used to feed our Newfie on Bakers Complete but I'm not sure if it would be ok for a Springer and a Bernese as they both have such different needs, so am I going to have to buy 2 different complete foods or is there one out there that will fill the needs of both dogs??
Oh I also think he is claustrophobic as when he goes in the crate either in the house or the car and you shut the door he goes nuts howling and crying, if you put him in the cage with the door open he curls up and goes to sleep.

Our Irish was fine until six months of age, when we switched him on to the next stage food - both JWB foods. Our patio pressure washer was kept very busy !!
After a few months on mashed spud, tapioca, turkey mince and some veg and gravy he had settled down.
The JWB standard foods quote themselves as 'wheat gluten free'. That is the problem - with our Irish. He has the dog version of human coeliac disease - he can't take ANY gluten. Rice contains gluten, etc.
He has now been on JWB Veg and Meat/Fish food - green foil bags - for over three years. The other dogs converted to this as well for ease. It took him a couple of years to regain his weight after a bad start.
Other similar foods include the Fish4 brand, which would work. Other have been discussed in previous postings - a regular topic. Basically there is food (eg Bakers), Wheat Free Food - then Gluten Free / Best Food. The prices go up of course - but needs must.

I would be a little concerned that he's having an adverse reaction to the injection. If he was ok on the food before that point and isn't now, then it seems all too likely does it not?
They also said it may be worms, but he was wormed 3 days before we picked him up. We've got worming powders for him as we have sheep and cows and apparently he may have picked something up from the sheep. Which doesn't help as we have an orphan lamb at the moment that we are having to hand rear. The next few days will consist of trying to get him solid and trying to stop him running off with a mouthful of sheep/cow pooh. And then see what the vet says on Monday when we take him with the Bernese who will be getting his first lot of injections.
Diarrhoea is a very unlikely adverse reaction to a vaccine and for so long after. The vets are right to delay the 2nd vacc though.
We would suggest testing the faeces esp for giardia and campylobacter, both common infections in pups (and zoonotic)
he's a bit young to be already suffering wheat intolerance.
The vets will have special diets such as Hills I/d, PVD EN, royal canin sensitivity. All fine for him to have and all designed for this sort of problem. I'd be tempted to phone then tom to get some.
What's the name of the wormer you've got?
How long did he have diarrhoea before he got seen by the vets (I'm guessing 2wks) This is a long time for a pup to have it for so his guts are going to be a bit of a mess at the mo (pups with diarrhoea should be seen if is going on for 24hrs and not getting much better by the 2nd day.)
He may need some pre and probiotics (from your vets) to help settle his gut flora.
Sorry it's a lot of info, hope some of it helps!
And hope he's feeling better soon.

^^^^^ All of this.
We had problems with our dog Ava, just after we got her, she started with runny poo's and losing weight, whilst tests were done the vet got her straight on Royal Canin Hypoallergenic dried food with Protexin Pro-kolin Enterogenic powder to add to her food and that helped stabilise her till we got to the bottom of things

We hadn't changed his food he was on the same food he was raised on with the breeder.
He had, had diarrhea for about a week before going back to the vets, but he was normal otherwise, not showing any other signs of distress, just not putting any weight on although growing.
He wasn't showing any interest in the dry food.
The worming powder is Panacure but he had been wormed with the same stuff 2 days before we picked him up.
He's on eggs, rice, chicken and having some of the lambs milk and he's putting weight on and the diarrhea seems to be clearing slowly.
They did say they had food they usually recommend but had run out.
We need to get him straight then start to think of another food, we pick up the Bernese tomorrow so will see what he is being fed on and maybe wean Diesel onto the same stuff.

Panacur is the ideal wormer for a pup and should help if diarrhoea being caused by giardia, so only concern is likely to be the campy.
Have you looked into the vet food and pre/probiotic. It would be good to get on top of the diarrhoea as quick as poss and they may speed things up. Though good news re: the improvement so far and esp the weight gain

Our boxer/spaniel cross suffers intermittently from dodgy tum but we manage to keep it under control with Naturediet and gluten-free working dog biscuits - would definitely recommend the Naturediet as it can be microwaved as well, ours loves getting a hot dinner!
Had problems with a few dogs ,especially my last two rescue dogs.
Case 1- a collie cross ,who loved anything she could find at the rear of a Chinese takeaway. She would regularly climb over the rear gate and come back home wet with grease ans smelling of Chinese .Then for the next day or two , we'd be subjected to flavours of the orient. We managed to confine her to the house, and switch to Chappie.
Case 2 - latest one. Being an older dog, we thought of Iams.He ate out of hunger one day ,and then refused it. Next step -Chappie - which he loved ,and smell stopped. Then he decided he didn't like it. So we went for Sainsbury chicken, a supposedly bland mix. But still the rear end mix continued. Next step -Cesar -in round tins, and the air cleared. But then the price went from 38p a tin to 65 p /tin. We eventually tried Asda lamb with veg/peas. He loves it,and the foul air- gone. He's got some mixer in a bowl, in case he gets peckish. So far ,it's still there .He's a very active 11 year old. Most folks think he's a six year old. I still think he's too heavy( and his food is on this principle), but to see him run/ chase vermin, it's hard to think of him as an 11 year old dog .
So ,perhaps it's down to the food he will eat, coupled with acceptable rear end performance.

Well he went back to the vets today and has had his final injections and his chip. He has put on weight and the vets are very happy with him. He is now solid and no more diarrhea he's been fed on scrambled egg, rice, yoghurt, rice pudding, weetabix and he's been having lambs milk as we have an orphan lamb and we've given him that on the weetabix.
We got our Bernese at the weekend and he has come with Beta. As we had taken the Springer off his Eukenuba to get him solid we've given him the Beta and he seems to like that. And I've managed to get them both on the same food, result!

Try Pets at Home for your Beta, they are always running deals such as buy one get one half price etc.
