First ducklings of year
Discussion
Had a good look around the pond and river -still no sign. But from the size of the ducklings and time of year ,it's possible that some organisation has taken them out for safety. Seems to happen in this park yearly with Swans. And Mrs S is sitting at the moment, so looking out for cygnets in a few weeks .

Pike + ducklings = snack .
We have a pair taking up their usual nesting site on our dew pond. Often they nest 100m away from any water and walk them in when they have all hatched.
Have certainly seen some medium sized pike in years gone past, but , the river at point where the ducklings were last seen is deep, unless the pike have come up for a feed . saw a pike take a duckling a few years back...was very sad...one minute there were 6...next there were 5...literally just snaffled it off the surface
co-incidentally I kayaked next to a massive pike yesterday on the Wye - was at least 3 foot. I think it was pretty ill - was blind and seemed to have some sort of fungal infection.....hopefully just very old and on last legs. Got worlds worst iphone photo in case interesting

no ducklings here yet.....

Bloody hell it's a shark!!!
Poor ducklings get hammered from all sides but the worst by far, mink! Released by people who have done more damage to wildlife than any mink breeder ever did.
Used to be one pike that stalked in very shallow water close to where folks used to feed ducks on the bank. Quite a large one, possibly waiting for a duckling. Poor ducklings get hammered from all sides but the worst by far, mink! Released by people who have done more damage to wildlife than any mink breeder ever did.
And I've heard tales of mink in the area .Know we've also got foxes.Used to be a common site ,a pigeon body with no head .

I used to love pike fishing during the winter, such beautifull creatures.
