I've had a fairly successful fish tank up and running for 3 years now and I think it's time for a strip down and rescape.

Seeing as it's been running 24/7 for 3 years and it's not the quietest I'm thinking of getting a new external filter. My tank is tropical 200L and will be planted. My current filter is a fluval 405.

Can anyone recomend a new filter? I'm tempted by the eheim thermo filters or the new fluval G3 ones.

I am a fan of the Eheim filters. I have 3 of them and they are virtually silent and easy to clean etc. I prefer the Professional 3 range as they are a bit easier to dismantle etc.
I have never tried the thermo filters. I use a Rena smart heater which joins onto the pick up tube of the filter so is one less thing in the tank. Also they are titanium so unbreakable and being black they dont stand out too much.
Good luck with the rescape

Eheim all the way, 2217 or even a 2215 would be perfect for a 200l

I use Eheim Eccos - supposedly saves me a penny every ten years in electrickery costs or something.

Thanks for your advice guys. Looks like eheim is the one to go for.

Unfortunately the rescape project has been delayed as my laptop has decided to die on me but I will update with what I've gone for on the filter front in a couple of months.

When you do get it, I highly advise sticking 100g of Seachem Purigen in there. My tank has just went from yellow/tea coloured water (damn mopani bogwood!) to crystal clear in a matter of hours as below..

Highly recommend!

Wut? Black water is good, naturally antiseptic and slows algae growth. I remove the carbon from any filter I have and add extra "black water extract" to encourage it.
