...what wood?

indoor only, but might like to stain or varnish the outside (obviously out of chewing range) so any advice on wood and coatings would be brilliant!

cheers

Ours have been made out of all sorts of scrap wood, pine, ply, obechi even a bit of oak. Generally lined with offcuts of flooring vinyl. One was made out of a huge pile of floorboard offcuts (damn heavy to lift though!)

Pine is poisonous to Guinea Pigs but I have four of them in separate pine boxes (not coffins wink) and they don't chew at all. I used Ronseal quick drying matt varnish to coat the inside faces of the wood.

My 'Pigs' are indoor only and instead of a cage I built a 4 x 2 foot wooden box, without a lid. Here is the one I built for my Tortoise, the Guinea boxes are identical to this but obviously don't have soil in:

Much better than cages IMO.
