Well strictly speaking catching birds and then he just plays with them while they flap around with broken necks.
The other week it was a chick, still with its eyes closed, then a massive pigeon. How he got it through the cat flap I'll never know.
What's the best thing to do?
Let cat carry on and, eventually, kill it or dispatch it ones self?
Poor bird today was flapping around so a couple of pellets to its head soon stopped its suffering. I don't like killing animals (unless they're ugly and no body loves) especially when its mate was sitting on the fence going crazy.
Naughty cat.

Cat is only doing what cats do catch things what did you expect it to do. You say you don't like animals being killed well in most cases if the cats had not killed it something else would of the natural food chain and all that.
Same as a dog it's instinct is to kill but haven't got the chance as its on a lead when outside there is normaly a story every few weeks or so of a dog killing kids when did a cat last kill a kid.

I suppose I'm pretty fortunate that my hunters usually dispatch their prey pretty swiftly, I wouldn't be able to kill anything myself that's for sure. Plus, I'd always worry I was killing it prematurely; last year we had a seemingly lifeless baby blackbird on the kitchen floor, after a few hours of feeding him and keeping him warm he woke me up the next morning chirping his head off!
