What kinda of snake is this?

This handsome devil swam across the river while we we kayaking last weekend. I cant find any websites to help me work out what species it was. Anyone here know their snakes?

Not an expert but looking at the head shape and colouring (and that it was swimming) it looks to be a common European viper.

Short tempered and a nasty bite.. In fact he looks to coiling up ready in your second photo?

In fact I would lay money on it...

Yes Viper would be my vote. There are a few different types in Europe but they are much the same.
