Recently got a "new" ten year old Pug 307 estate and unsurprisingly our old Pug 307 hatch dog guard doesn't fit.

I'd much rather have a dog cage anyway, so that we can store luggage in the boot without it all falling onto the dog.

I have some very basic questions though, especially as prices vary wildly - between about £150 to £600.

Are there any shops that do good quality car dog cages, or is it just the online suppliers?

How to they fix into the boot, or do they just sit there loose, ready to fly forward with dog inside in the event of emergency braking etc?

Are the collapsible ones really safe or will we need one of the big solid steel beasts to really protect the dog ( as opposed to merely preventing the dog from jumping all over the car)?

If anyone has any recommendations, I'd be very grateful for the advice.

Try these guys @ Atherstone. A friendly bunch I have done a little business with in the past. Most of the business is suppling manufactures with accessories.

They will measure up and manufacture on site if you can take your car over, call them 1st though to discuss it's a factory rather than a showroom.

In my car I have an extra large single safedog cage in my car. Needed up going for one of these as I needed space for both my dogs but didn’t want to take up the whole boot. I got about a 1/3rd free at the side and both dogs can lie down comfortably. It was not cheap (cheaper than current prices though), but it was the only off the shelf cage that would allow me this flexibility. It could have cost more to go for a custom built cage. As for holding it in place.... well for starters it's heavy, but obviously this does not mean it will not move. It is held down by a strap at the front and the back to the eyelets in the boot. The straps are supplied with the cage.
Mine is similar to the picture at the bottom of the X5, but as it is XL, it takes up 2/3rds of the boot rather than 1/2.

Thanks both, I'd already seen the safedog cages but didn't know about the atherstone company. If they can quote me cheaper than safedog then I'd be quite tempted.

Barjo engineering for anything dog guard related. Brilliant products, very well made and fairly priced.

Had about four of the car specific dog guards now.

Recommended.

I just bought a ferplast atlas 100 - its massive tbh but was only £30 from a certain auction site. Nearly brand new. Luckily i have a landrover but for the price its great and can use it as a crate in the house.

I've invested in a Safedog single XL and I am really pleased with it. It's got loads of space for the dog and I can still fit a couple of suitcases in beside it. http://www.safedog.co.uk/Peugeot.htm

Actually I can't say how impressed with it I am. Everything else we'd considered had seemed so flimsy. And the bugger behaves in it too - no barking madly at every tree we pass for a start smile

Good choice. The only issue I have found with it is that I cannot use it as a normal cage as it is a bit too wide to fit through a lot of doors and does not collapse down. Had mine over a year now and I have been and still am very happy with it. If I am out for work, I will have no dogs in the car, so I sometimes use the cage to lock valuables such as the laptop in.

Barjo products are top quality. Given its an old car you should be OK - he is tied as to what he can sell sometimes if its a current product available that is also available as a main dealer official option - not wanting to loose the hand that feeds you.

I've not tried Barjo, but the Safedog cage was substantially cheaper than the quote I got from the Atherstone company.
