British Short Hairs - some questions

Hi everyone. Well, it's been a few years since the passing of our beloved Persian Bazil, and I finally feel I'm ready to own another pet. Recently been looking at very cute pictures of British Short Hairs, and have a few questions I'd like to ask.

First of all their general health and well being. The Persians that we had always seemed to be very frail, and maybe bred too 'hard'. Do British Short Hairs share the same genetic traits?

Temperament - do they enjoy human company or do they prefer to be on their own? And also our previous cats have always stayed indoors but if we do purchase another cat our preference would be for it to roam a little. Should I have any concerns about this? (basically will he be able to find his way home?!!)
