I've come home from work today to find what looks like oil all over my house from one of the cats, he's obviously been licking himself and his fur is slightly matted on his tummy. Is there any concern that he's been licking this off all day whilst I've been at work?

Also, how do I remove oil from my cream carpets?

I'm afraid there could be. I think you should ring the vets for advice re the poss ingestion. Ideally you want to wash the oil off him using swarfega, failing that Fairy (though it won't be as good.

I know this will be hard to do properly esp if you're on your own so again it may actually need to be a trip to the vets tonight.

Some oils/ fuels can be harmful if ingested but most cats do ok but tx is often needed.

I'm afraid I can't help with the carpet!

When you phone the vets the nurseay say they ought to see your cat (which I'd agree with) if she/he saya not too worry make sure that's on the vets say so.

Re: the carpet, soak the stain with dry-cleaning solvent (old-fashioned Tippex thinners - trichloroethane), blotting up the stain with paper towels and working inwards.

Follow this with a soap/vinegar solution of 1 tsp Stergene/Woolite + 1 tsp white vinegar in 250 ml of warm water, again blotting with paper towels and working inwards.

Hope the cat's ok.

Thanks MC, I'll try that tomorrow morning

Bex, vet rang poisons unit who just advised wash in detergent and observe closely. They had a poorly dog arrive whilst I was there so have had to wash cat at home, not an easy job. So I have a very stressed bedraggled cat sulking in the corner, poor thing frown

Well done on doing it though, really not easy to bath a cat on you'd own, I've had go do that!. I know I've seen cats be given steroids to try and reduce the risk of an inflammatory reaction so wasn't sure if that'd be relevant for your cat.

Fingers crossed all will be fine, it should be smile

I'm sure he'll be fine once he calms down, the vet asked about charcoal and gastric protection but it seemed as though they advise treatment only if cat is showing signs of toxicity or aspiration pneumonia.

Ooh service is extortionate, so glad he's insured

He's OK, has sulked under the bed all night and just woke me up trying to destroy the front door so he can get out. He's still stressed and constantly licking himself, not helped by my other cat hissing at him as he now smells of fairy liquid frown

It will be better in time. As long as he is ok that is the important bit.

Just check his skin isn't t getting sore. The combination of oil on the skin, washing him and then him licking it may make it sore (then he'll lick it more!) He may need a re check if he does and maybe a collar frown)

Hopefully it'll all settle down today.
