So our Lab, Milo (7 months old), was sick about 2 hours ago and since is lethargic although responsive. Currently laid out on his bed, hasn't eaten his dinner but will raise his legs for a tummy tickle!

Being new to dog ownership I don't know whether I should be concerned or just let time resolve it. Not asking for an on-line diagnosis but should I be calling the vet or wait until tomorrow?

is the dog drinking?

you can test for dehydration by "gently" pulling up the skin on the scruff of the neck and seeing how fast the skin recoils back to normal (try this on the back of your hand you will see the idear) slow recoil means dehydration.

try feeding your dog its fav titbit if you are in any doubt call the vet they wont stress if it nothing in fact i know my vet would rather be called for no reason than miss somthing serious.

good luck

Always such a difficult to call. If it's only the once give a little more time. Offer small amounts water and some bland treats. If he is normally a greedy dog but won't eat anything or is sick again (or tries to be sick and can't) then phone the vet (they'll have an out of hours service.

If still not wanting to eat by tom get an appt.

Hopefully all will be better by tom. No chance she's had anything different in the last day?

Thanks for the replies. Since my first post he's been sick again but kind of perked up although not right.

I haven't seen him drink.

I'll offer him some water and a favourite treat but looks like a vet visit coming up....

He did go out for a walk before his dinner but after quizzing my daughter who took him she was not aware of him picking up anything unusual. It was 4 hrs plus after the walk before he was sick.

I have a black lab, she does miss the odd meal. I take no notice as long as she is drinking. Mine will eat a slug or s ail or something in the garden.

dont wish to be alarmist but iv owned labs and i know they are gannetts

he "could" have picked up something like a slug pellet or something else that has upset him
somethings do not react imediatly so the 4 hrs could mean nothing.

honestly id call the vets just to be sure

Thanks for your cautionary advice. He hasn't changed much in the last 2 hours (aside from the second vomit). He's still responsive. We'll keep an eye on him for another hour or two; if he remains the same we'll wait until tomorrow. If not we'll call our local vet.

i find most humans totaly insufferable but the pact we have with our animals is one i find very rewarding

they give their whole being to us and as owners we need to repay that by looking out for them espeshaly when they cant for themselves due to the mindless actions of idiots

ohh look now you have got me started

With your choice of motors how can I not take your advice...but I promise I'm going to keep a close eye on him tonight. There's no change ATM....

I'll update as and when. Thanks for your concern.

Why ? Dogs (especially labs) eat all sorts of things, they vomit from time to time. I don't feel the need to pay for vets kids to get a private education just because the dog spewed.

Exactly!

Do you go to the doctor every tme you're sick? Not that I'm sick that often but I'd usually give myself a day or so to see if I recover before going to the GP.

Try feeding Milo something easy on the stomach tomorrow.
Scrambled egg or rice with chicken. See how he gets on.

Is the dog drinking yet?
Is he eating anything at all?
Is he able to walk around?
Is he breathing normally?
Has he gone to the toilet since being taken ill?

He seems a little more lively this morning but still no food or water. The latter is more of a concern so we'll have to find some way of getting water down him.

My old school pragmatic country vet always tells me to make sure they drink little and often when ill even if you have to syringe some water in their mouth. I'm not one one for rushing to the vets on a whim but given he's no better I'd be taking him to the vets, for the sake of £25 is it worth the risk of him having eaten some poison or even a slug that's been poisoned.

Our collie's the same age and had exactly the same symptoms - off his food, very lethargic and sick a couple of times. This was the day after Boxing Day and lasted for a couple of days. Vet said it was probably something he'd eaten, and most likely from when he was out for a walk and sniffing round everything. He said to let him sleep as much as he wanted and that his being sick - it was just bile rather than anything more substantial - was just him purging himself. He's gradually got back to his normal self and seems right as rain again now.
