Leopard Gecko

Evening all,

A slightly different one but here goes:

A new addition to our household is a 4month old Leopard Gecko.

We have a glass tank, heat mat and thermostat (along with everything else needed!) But are having trouble with temp regulation. Plugged into the mains directly the mat side of the tank gets to c30 degrees and climbing but plugged into the stat the temp falls but the mat is still warm and according to the stat is getting power.

Any thoughts?

where is the temp receiver for the thermostat? pics always useful

The Stats temp sensor is on the substrate over the mat.

We've changed the stat today and seem to have a better / more stable temp but again the light on the stat isn't turning off when it gets up to temp, which I think it should (microclimate 300w), but the temp appears to be stabilising, albeit higher than the stat is set at. It's confusing I know that.

I'll get pics up tmw, it's in junior's room and he's just gone to bed!

doesn't sound unfamiliar though - i'm frankly suspicious of the quality of some of the electronic kit - i've had to go through a fair few stats and humidity regulators cos they just didnt work properly.

the turning off thing happens with mine sometimes - if its warming up, and should be at 80, it will often go to 81/82 before switching off....but an hour later temp are usually around 80 as they should be. maybe its being cleverer the we realise!

also...the sensor position is very important....might be better to stick it to the wall of the tank - the design of them needs clear air around to work properly i think.

Well I suspect it's utter fluke but we appear to have a steady 28c in the warm end.

I suspect either a dicky stat or you're right and they're more advanced / sensitive than I'm crediting them with!

If you are using an iPhone (per chance) you cant upload pics to the web via the cameraroll directly, from either the mobile or full site.

They're pretty creatures. Pretty good at escaping, given half a chance!

Your setup looks better than ours, higher ledges and places to climb up!

We put a plastic tub with a small hole on one side of the heatmat, filled with very damp paper towelling. It got warm and humid, the gecko liked that. You need to help them shed and watch their toes shed properly if not damp enough, come shedding time. Looks like you have a nice water dip for him though plus the water bowl.

It's not actually a dip but a hollowed rock, there is a lid (not in shot) and it's filled with damp spagnum moss - she loves it.

I don't know if you're close but Leaping Lizards in York have loads of ex-display bits they're selling.
