There are many different types of goldfish that live in coldwater. You can also have white cloud mountain minnows, certain snails and a plecostomus. There may also be others.

Goldfish and shrub unkind are good as are golden tench and bitterling. Personally I don't like many of the fancy goldfish. Think they look grotesque but they are popular.

yeah goldfish are poo machines and need decent sized tanks and lots of filtration. You can get temperate fish which can cope in an unheated tank, have a read of this article:

http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/content.php?...

TBH though a heater doesn't cost much to run at all. A small tank with a 100w heater (bear in mind that the heater will only be on about 30-40% of the time as it is controlled by a thermostat) costs about 10p per day to heat.

Food doesn't cost much at all. Maybe £10/year, plus drop the odd bit of courgettee or lettuce in as a treat, or cooked, peeled frozen peas.

ebay for tanks or join up to a couple of tropical fish forums and look in their classifieds.

You don't need to replace (and really shouldn't ever have to) the filter sponges despite what the instructions/shops tell you to do, it's where all the bacteria that break down the fish waste live so you want to look after them. Just rinse it out every month or so in used tank water to get the gunk out.

I run two largish tropical tanks, I got 20 quids worth of fish shop vouchers for christmas and I've still got them as I can't think of anything to buy! So once your set up they're about the cheapest pets you can have imo.

So if my room is around 18-21 degrees usually in which the fish tank will say will the water heater be on much of the day in the tank. I.e. if i get a 100w or 300w water heater how long is it usually on within the day just so i can get an idea on running costs?

Yes. Get the biggest tank you can, much easy to look after in the long run
