Tailgate secure ventilation
Discussion
Anyone had experience or preference for either of the following:
http://www.ventlock.com/tailgatelock.php
or
http://www.walky.co.uk/walky-lock-range.html
I know we don't necessarily get raging heat in the summers up here in Scotland, but the sunshine is intense. I'd like to be responsible and have the kit available if we travel, hence the question.
My preference is for the VentLock because the Walky lock looks like you could unscrew one end and release it from the car, but I could be wrong.

I saw the vent lock and made my own, so can't comment on the quality.
The effect is fantastic though. With just open windows the heat rises but without low ventilation for cool air to enter, the air flow stalls and heat can still build. With it in and the windows/sunroof opened there is a easy air flow route, with the dog sat in the cool air entering. I've measured boot temps on a hot, sunny day and it's lower than outside. I'e even gone to the car in the summer to find him shivering.
Best combined with tinted windows. If you also have wind deflectors on the doors, you can leave the boot propped and windows open an inch or two even on a wet day.

Good stuff, now, how do I retrofit a sunroof The effect is fantastic though. I'll just open a window a bit too.

Interesting. Do the dogs not just squeeze out?
The bar I made is 5-6" long and with the thickness of the door gives an opening of 3ish inches. My 40kg of Weim can't get through! My friends Whippet could get through as a pup but not anymore. The ones in the original post are available in different lengths to allow varying amounts of opening.

Presumably there are no insurance issues with using these? Got the sites bookmarked for when we get our dog

Whilst I don't doubt its not as secure as a fully closed boot, I think there are some instances where the dog has to go and can't take part fully. There was a story in the press this last week of a sensory dog for a school that was left without adequate ventilation who died.
Don't want that happening.
Although the locks work with it's in place, I wouldn't leave the car with the boot propped and expect it to be totaly secure. That said a 40kg Weim might keep people away.
I use mine mainly at work where the dog sleeps in the car; It's parked in the yard and in sight all the time (and the car is rarely locked). It's also been used after walks when we've been back at the car but not leaving immediatly, at cafe's where the car is in sight and when camping it's handy when other campers kids are running around.
I wouldn't use it say, at a show, where the car was in a car park and we'd be away from it for some time. To be effective on a hot sunny day, I think it needs the windows open (at least a bit) to get the through flow of air.
