I'm caring for a relatives one year old dog . I don't know the breed its small and fluffy I think she said it was a shnaps . Iv been caring for it for the week And its pissed five times (three of them today) in the house, twice upstairs, once on my spare bed, and twice in the kitchen. It has also shat in the kitchen. Its been walked daily and regularly let out in the garden. At first it was scared around me as I'm unfamiliar but now at the end of the week when its had lots of attention she is still occasionally a bit unsure about me. This is my first dog caring experience and I'm worried. Is this normal for a one year old dog ? Is it me ? Is it I'll?. Some ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Luckley the owner is back tommorow so if she is Ill she won't have to hang on for long.

Thanks

Is it male? If so is it neutered?

If the dog does it's business in the house you should take a dump on the floor next to the dog poo. It marks that area as yours and stops the dog doing it.
You have to leave it there for a few days and they get the message.

Sounds like the dog hasn't been house trained - although your relative should have warned you if that was the case.

Sounds more like the dog is distressed.

Every time she eats or drinks take her outside to go toilet. If she goes, praise her.

Yep confused, conflicted and distressed due to being a strange home etc. Very slight chance of cystitis, if she still does it at home the owner should get her checked out

OK thank you very much guys . Reflecting on this I think the main factors are the fact that

I have walked the dog everyday but at irregular times so she may have not been regimented

she does not know me so thinks its OK to st all over the shop

She has not been house trained by the owner

I'm I right . as I say this is my first time caring for a dog , plus I've always wanted one and now I'm having second thoughts as to whether I'd be a good owner.

Thanks

Yes I agree now - I thought the OP was staying at the owner's home to look after the dog...hadn't realised the dog was actually holidaying at the OP's home.

OP please don"t be put off by this experience. It's an eye opener but certainly does not mean you'd fail to be a good dog owner. We all have to start somewhere but do some reading first, not once you have a dog smile

Why is it that when ever someone says they have a behavioral problem with a dog, they alway bring this up, like it's some kind of magical cure?

This sounds more like it. I have to say, I'm surprised it hasn't got better in a week. Have you been at home with the dog all week, or has it been left for long periods of time on it's own?

Brought up because entire males are far more likely to cock there leg around a strangers house. Was not suggesting get it neutered I was fact finding as I didn't know what sex we were dealing with at that time. I cannot give reliable advice without proper info.

Probably a bit old for cage training.

Newspapers in the areas it pisses and plops to begin with, then gradually decrease them and move them towards the back door/area you want the dog to exit for its business, finally move them outside and praise the dog and reward whenever it goes outside. Don't shout at it and throw it out after it has an accident, it will associate outside with being stressful. Put dog in garden/outside 20 minutes after every meal and reward and praise if dog does its thing.

I wouldn't say that at all. A puppy is trained by you at an early point and may such problems can be avoided. A puppy can also be taken to other people's houses etc and be around dogs/people and so on to desensitise to such things.
