Have ran a 600L tank for ~ 10 years, throughout this time it has run on a Rena XP3 external filter.

Had the odd problem with seals etc, but now weekly cleaning required as it pumps less and less water (and after a week it's a mere trickle) I think it's time for it to be replaced. In fact I think we've done very well in getting it to last this long!

Tank holds tropical fish.

XP3 appears to be discontinued so ideas and suggestions for it's replacement please, along with reasons as to why a particular filter.

Thanks

Can't help with question sir bag, but have you any pictures of tank, love to see what a 600 ltr tank looks like.

I've a jewell 475 ltr and thought that was big.

I run a Fluval 306 for my 180L tank. Extremely easy to maintain, self priming after I've had it disconnected for cleaning and plenty of internal baskets for various filter media.

If I were to go for a bigger tank then something like the G6 or the FX5 is what I'd get

I would hazard a guess that it'll look a lot like yours, except a little over 20% larger, and in someone else's house. wink

the current "rena" model for that size aquarium is an API I think

no reason to expect it wouldn't work well, I have used the smaller model on one of my tanks for a while with no problems

Fluval 305 for me, 250L tank, easy to maintain as I am new to this.

I'm running a 600 litre Mbuna tank, it's filtered by two Eheim 2028 pro2 filters and an Eheim Ecco pro 300.

Buy from eBay for about £60 ish used.

Don't bother with the Fluval fx that someone is bound to suggest.

The Ehiem stuff is amongst the best... always pay to overspec the filter.

Something like the current pro 3 range would do it - probs best to go for the 1200XL.

Are you running a sump?

I'd get a twin filter set up if I was doing this smile

Yeo I'd go for dual eheim pro's as well. Bit of backup in case one fails and can alternate cleaning them out so no risk of mini-cycles by disturbing the media. Been using eheims for a few years and never had to repair or replace anything (currently have a 2073, a 2215 and a 2322 thermo on various tanks, never had any issues with any of them). Got all of mine nearly new off ebay or forums, made them a lot cheaper.

I'd agree with the Eheim suggestions as well. I've run various filters over the years (including internal Juwel filters, cheapo canisters, Fluvals etc) and the only ones that I have never regretted spending money on have been the Eheims.

They are easy to get any replacement parts for (most online stores have the exploded view diagrams for all the different part numbers) and very rarely cause a problem. The only major problem that I have encountered was a common fault on one model where the priming mechanism fails and causes a slow leak - a little bit of silicone later and the filter is working perfectly and hasn't leaked since.

If you want a bit of control over the flow rate then consider looking into the 3e versions which allow you to adjust the flow and can give you an indication of how soon the filters need changing.

Rena appear to have pulled their filters from the UK market. API is the US arm.

Went for a Aquamanta in the end and so far so good.
