So since this morning when he tries to meow it's either completely silent or just a strange croaky noise. He seems to be acting perfectly normally and he's eating OK so I'm not too concerned, but the missus is really worried about him.

Any idea what it could be?

He's been meowing too much and has a sore throat.

One of ours does that sometimes.

My cat does the mute meow every now and then. Perfectly capable of a normal one.

It's probably viral which had caused a pharyngitis.

As long as everything else about him is fine ie bright, eating normally, no gagging/ wretching/ coughing/ gulping and any signs of illness/ discomfort in general give it a few days.

They can improve themselves on 2-3 days, if not prob time for a vet ck or sooner if starts showing any of the aforementioned signs :-)

If this continues for a few days I have the solution:

dip said cat in liquid nitrogen and run it through a band saw - Mmeeeooww! problem solved.

Not the usual post I expect to see in the All Creatures thread!

Sounds ok.

He may have been out, uh, chatting up the ladies..... Sore voice now as a result...

I've had a few cats that have done this, some on and off and some that have been very much silent pretty much 90% of the time, think its down to dry throat most of the time with them.

my old cat did this for a couple of days after coming back from the cattery after she was in it when we were on holiday.

as she normally used to meow whenever she was left alone when she thought no one was around, as if to try and get our attention, or when she wanted feeding or a lap, or a treat, or anything really, she just meowed herself hoarse over the 2 weeks being in there, but after a couple of days her voice was back to normal, but just a bit more vocal than before

I don't think she liked being left alone atall.

They don't like it. Cats hate change and would prefer to be in their own space. I get a pet sitter in to look after Bob when I'm away.

Have you checked up on the pet sitter at all? Or had someone else do it? We had one that came recommended but had them checked on without their knowledge and they were st. Will not be using them again.

It also doesn't solve the alone part of the problem, think we will be giving a cattery a go next time

It's a local person who came recommended.

But, I also have a neighbour pop in every day or so to play with Bob.

I investigated all the local cattery options and believe me their enclosures are tiny, with litter trays just inches from food bowls. All the cats I saw looked depressed.

we had a pet sitter who promised to be able to give our cat tablets whilst we were away. that didn't work very well.
