Damn, one of our dogs just died.
Discussion
I just had a message from my daughter that she went out to clean and feed the dogs early this morning and Cookie was just laying down, dead.
Nothing obviously wrong with him, no injuries, no noises during the night. The other 8 are all okay, acting normal, but Cookies brother is all quiet and morose.
I'm working away for three more weeks, and I asked the wife to maybe call the local vet to have a look and see if she can give some sort of a diagnosis.
Cookie was a strange character, a mixed breed rescue dog, thus named because we though he was a girl when we first brought him home.
Here he is, on the right, a very shiny and solid looking fella. His brother Nugget is a sort of scruffy faded black, but taller and fiercer. I'm rambling now, I can feel tears coming, so anyway, RIP Cookie.

A sad incident made all the more distressing for being so unexpected and confusing
Sympathies, KH. Always hard to lose a loved furry one
Good idea on the vet, and Ali's suggestion; rule out any possibility of the cause of death being something that could potentially happen to any of the rest of your hound-pack.
Thoughts are with you and your family x

Thanks for the good wishes everybody. The daughter is upset but the wife was absolutely mortified when I called home, convinced it was her own fault, that she must have left a puddle of cleaner or something laying around where Cookie could have lapped it up.
I've told her that it was just a tragic accident if anything. The buried Cookie today behind my garage under some concrete paving we have, as they didn't want to go taking his body down to the vet or anything like that.
She knows to be double careful when she is cleaning around the yard. I've told her just to use water most days now, maybe just use disinfectant one or two days a week at most, and make double sure everything is well and truly sluiced down with water afterwards.
And just to make it worse, I built them a lovely new holiday chalet a few weeks ago too as they were too many for their old small cages.
