So, I just won a battle with a bluebottle, eventually!

But! Mr Bluebottle is flying along, I bat him back where he came from at high speed, the width of the kitchen...and he comes back for more, how?

I also have one of those bug swatting, electrified tennis racquet things, I've hit flies with that and seen big blue sparks and yet the fly can still carry on! What are these things made of?!

Ahh yes the electric tennis racket (or racquet if you prefer) of death. My OH bought one a couple of weeks ago and I have been testing it on various insects. Anything much over mozzy size doesn't die. Your standard fly takes a good few zaps and a bee (which I normally wouldn't kill but this one had gone mental and was walking round in circles) took everything the racket of doom could throw at it and kept going.

Going a bit o/t but another fly related question - how the hell are they SO fast?!

I need to get one. Quite like the sound of The Executioner.

Yeah that's pretty much what we have although it isn't called The Executioner!

I can't see the specs label on the Amazon image but fwiw ours is rated at 45µC although I don't know what the C stands for I guess it must be a measurement of capacitance (why don't they use farads?). Whatever they are, IMO 45 of them isn't enough.

There is or was a video on Youtube by the legendary Photonicinduction which shows the effectiveness of these devices once modified. I can't find it right now but maybe someone else can.

That made me chuckle - unless it has at least 200 of that unknown unit of measure, I'm disappointed wink Perhaps it would be easier to train to do the chopsticks thing like in Karate Kid?

I have a 200 watt hand held red laser beam with a set of telescopic sights on top.

Needless to say I rarely get out of my chair. I simply aim press the button and let the particle beam weapon do its work over about ten seconds.

I do have to say though that for the longest time my wife confiscated it because of the brown marks it made on the walls when used too close

Where would somebody obtain such a thing?

I'm guessing it's micro Coulomb's.

It was a link to a hong kong shop posted on pistonheads a few years ago. Its party trick is that it'll cause a match to ignite from a good couple of feet away, or bust a balloon (assuming the balloon is a dark colour. Batteries are the rechargable C size, it take two and completely drains them in about a minute! I ended up swapping them for the high current ones you get in model aeroplanes.

If you scan the internet there are rather a lot of videos based on removing laser diodes out of everyday equipament such as old disc drives and testing them to see how powerful they will go before they bust. Some of the disc drive stuff is quite impressive as I remember.

Anyway bit of a thread diversion.

They effectively live in a difference time frame than us. In very simple terms, time passes by a lot slower from them, so things appear to move much slower than they do to us. That's why they can see the newspaper/electric tennis racquet coming from a mile off, and change direction in flight much faster. It's also why you can kill them much easier if you move very slowly, as you are hardly appearing to move to them. It's like being squashed by continental drift when you're not looking.
