After 7 years worth of waiting we finally found ourselves in the position to have a dog.

A few weeks back we met a breeder, picked our pup from the litter and on Saturday afternoon we collected George and took him home to live with us! Currently only 9 weeks so we are having to toilet train him at the moment which is a little tiring! Our kitchen floor has never been so clean!

Still he is a very affectionate dog, loves company - and probably too clever for his own good.

First 2 nights have been a little tiring - we have let him cry it out. Thinking a crate maybe the way to go as he might feel a little exposed in his basket?

Any tips for getting a new pup down for the night - water bottle / extra bedding and the shipping forecast have improved things but he really doesn't like being left alone at the moment.

Cheers

Crate is a good idea.
They like thier 'own' space.
Lovely dog.

We crated Lusso, put a blanket over the top of the crate and put a reasonable sized toy in as well. He did squeak during the night but only because he needed a pee, we let him out and then straight back into the crate until morning.

Good luck with George, he looks lovely.

Wear an old tshirt or sweat shirt and let him have that in a crate over night. Familiar scent can sometimes help.

Definitely go with a crate.

We have a pen around that( not sure that was the best idea) with puppy pads but so far he has never used them. He rattles his pen when he needs to go.

We are using baby monitors paperbag he goes in there ok sometimes a little fuss but only for 30 seconds

Oh just remembered we slept on the settee a few nights before I had the baby monitor idea. Probably silly but he goes in his crate ok.

Well we got a crate ... He hates it! We moved his bed into the cage and he will sit in his bed quite happily but as soon as the door closes he starts whining. Even when we are in the kitchen with him. We have been trying to get him slowly accustomed to being locked in for short periods. Any tips on how best to get him used to the crate? For all the good it's doing at the moment it's just a very large obstacle to navigate in the kitchen! If stupidly big!

On better news we had our first night where he settled down after about 10 mins moaning and slept through to 6.30. Didn't mess the place either which is progress!

It's bloody exhausting though!

Yeah nobody tells you how much hard work they are smile

We used treats. The idea is to get him to see it as something possitive. I wouldn't shut the door until he's happy in it.

Ours hated it at first very wary if it. After not long he started going in it on his own. Is it covered?

He looks lovely.

We used a sleep bunny for the first few nights which worked well. We also left a radio on quietly (Radio 4/World Service) which seemed to be reassuring (or so dull it sent him to sleep).

Alfie got used to his crate very quickly and will now just take himself off and get in it when he fancies a bit of peace and quiet.

He is slowly getting accustomed to the crate - will are leaving him in for short intervals, just so he gets used to it. It will hopefully make him less anxious when we are not around. Its slow progress though! He just wants to be with us. We have covered his cage, not sure it made much difference - but he is starting to settle. We tried the radio but that didn't really work - however I have found that Otis Reading tends to send him off! At least he has some music taste!

Still tired but he is starting to fit with our schedule which helps with the stress!

Bit an ADAPTIL plug in diffuser and put it next to the crate. It may help him settle. Not all dogs take to crates but give it a bit more time as long as he is getting better with it, keep going but they really aren't for every dog

The little bugger kept me up all last night - despite yesterday being as good as gold the night before and sleeping through. He is now flaked out in the corner of the office and I am strung out on caffeine trying to focus on work!

I wish there was an easy way to exhaust them in the evenings - as he is only 9 weeks I cant walk him, he also gets very lethargic past 8 when its time to go out to pee and doesn't seem interested in toys. Problem is he just naps all evening and then keeps us up when we go to bed!
