So here is my problem.

3 days ago we lost our Ridgeback Bentley to cancer the pain is extreme and our home feels it is missing something huge.

Today we see a 6 month old Ridgeback puppy in need of a home.

Do we even consider taking the plunge?

Sorry to hear about you losing your beloved pooch. It's painful!

But, why not? He needs a home and you have one to offer.

Sorry to hear about Bentley

I think you should go see the pup and see if it feels like the right time for you

Very sorry for your loss. frown

You do now have the opportunity of giving another animal a loving home, I think this post is a rhetorical question isn't it?

smile

Pics of Bentley and your new puppy are now needed. smile

Sorry to hear about Bentley, he was a handsome dog!

And why not take the plunge. The new pup will have a totally different character.

What a great looking dog!

The pup is a sweetie too. Why are you still on PH when you could be bringing it home? wink

Because I am not alone in this family and I need SWMBO to be on this journey with me especially as it will be her who will have most of the responsibility of day to day training and caring for this pup.

Only you and your family can decide if it is too early for you.

Only you know if it is too soon

However, you'd not be replacing your beloved Bentley, so don't think of it like that, you'd be giving another dog a loving home, in your time of need when you have a lot of love to give

This.

Bentley looks like he was quite a character, and the pup shows promise!

Wouldn't that be a great start to 2014?

We were in a similar situation to yourself OP earlier on in the year; Humphrey our Pug was PTS, he was 11, two weeks later we heard of a French Bulldog that needed re homing.

We were wondering whether it was too soon and what about Humphrey, is it doing a disservice to him etc, however two weeks after hearing about this French Bulldog we became her owners; Daisy is now sound asleep under the covers as I type this.

We weren't looking for a dog, we wanted to wait until at least the summer, I believe these things happen for a reason and what better than re homing a dog in need, we haven't replaced Humphrey however we have filled a Humphrey sized hole in our lives, if you feel it is right then go for it.

My folks are in the same shoes - Daisy dog died on the 25th, and everyone's wondering-but-not-quite-asking how soon is too soon.

I'm with other posters, I don't think there is a too soon as long as everyone's willing and able to commit to caring for the new dog well.

All the best - Daisy was 11 when she died (also with cancer), we'd had her since she was a little fluffball at 11 weeks and we miss her desperately.

Do it, I would love a dog but with our jobs it would just not be fair on one.

He would love a run in the back of the cerb as well wink
