Removing a wandering dog from a room/gym...
Discussion
Question for dog owners/handlers on here...
Say a dog wanders (not on a lead) through an open exterior door into a gym, how would be a the best approach to get the dog out ASAP before it scares everyone?
Whilst I do like dogs I've sadly haven't had the pleasure of owning one yet, so not sure if I would approach the situation in the best/safest way for both the dog and myself (grab by the collar/scruff? Try to shoo it away? Call it over? etc.). Obviously all dogs are different, some will probably try to lick me to death and some might be the other extreme
It's happened a few times before (not sure if it's the same dog/numpty owner or not). Obviously shutting the door would solve the problem, but the gym doesn't have A/C and even up here in Scotland in January it can get quite warm inside!

Since you and the dog don't really know each other, an aggressive approach might not be wise.
Find someone with biscuits or similar (small bits are fine) and encourage the dog your way, crouching down and trying words like 'treat'.
Our dog 100% definitely reacts differently to strangers who smile and those who do not.

Do not grab a dog you don't know by the collar/neck - it can very quickly bite if you do that - you may well scare it.
I just kind of get a dog to come with me... Not sure how to explain it but if you are friendly and invite it to come with you and offer a treat chances are it'll follow you outside for some attention and then the treat....

Sensible advice. Agree the friendly approach is probably best and try to lure/call it outside, I won't try to grab the collar then if it happens again.
Won't have many "treats" on me though other that a bottle full of Lucozade/Ribena/water
I guess once I get the dog outside I'll be able to locate the owner quickly... and then grab him by the scruff/collar
