A bit late! But an easy way to do it (and owning a shotgun I'm suprised you don't know) is to hold the head and swing the body through 360. Works every time. Also you can hold the bird by the the head cradling the bodyand throw the body downwards, whilst holding the head, it's the best way for chickens, in my experience, but works for most birds. Rabbits are easiest to grab and pull the head or strike the neck, which is more difficult.

Done that to a few pheasants in my time. Had to be careful as the kids were home & my lad in particular does like 'our' pigeons, told them the pigeon flew over the hedge but they both guessed correctly that I'd helped it do it!
