Visit to the vets
Discussion
Milly (11 month lab )has been scratching and chewing at herself for a while. I didn't realise how much until I noticed it was starting to cause slight bald patches around her hip and back area. So I organised a visit to the vet, mrs tt had to take her as I was working.
First problem when she got there was the vets lack of English, very difficult to understand and very difficult to be understood.
"Fleas", he kept saying, "she got fleas". Well she hasn't got fleas, 2 cats and 2 dogs I think we'd know. After an inspection he found it to be "skin inflammation".
Trying to get him to understand that we feed raw was difficult, he didn't seem to know at all what that was. Anyway, he told mrs to feed her on turkey and rice for a week, "we sell in here" he said and then prescribed 500mg Cephalexin, half tablet twice a day and Medrone V 4 mg, 1 tablet twice a day and to come back in a week. They sell James Wellbeloved
Problem is, I don't want to feed her on kibble, but is this my only choice? Help appreciated

Go and see another vet. If you weren't happy with the vet you saw, especially if you couldn't understand them, ask to see another.
It sounds like your dog has some sort of allergy, though there are other causes of skin irritation that can be ruled in or out with further work up. I'd say a food allergy is less likely given you're food raw, though not impossible.
I wouldn't be rushing to change diet until either you've seen another vet or you've seen what response you get to the medication.

I'm going to make sure that I take her back next week, hopefully understand better or a different vet.
She's been on raw since just after we got her at 10 weeks old and nothing has changed in the way she is fed or what she gets, the same as my other dog Sonny the cocker.
I was more concerned about what is so special about turkey and rice, or the cynic in me was thinking is it because "we sell in here". For all he understood, she could have been on that for months.
Strangely though, since Monday evening she has just about stopped scratching and chewing.

I would ask to see a different vet, you're paying to see them so you get to choose.
Allergies appear between 6 months and 6 years of age so just because nothing has changed doesn't mean the food isn't involved.
The itching will have stopped due to the medication, which at least makes it a lot more likely your dog has an allergy of some sort.

Go to a different vet, one that speeks ENGLISH your beloved pet is at risk, I certainly wouldn't give any medication unless you know what it is of for.
