I've got a 370L tank that was set up as a New World cichlid tank - after several years, several stocking changes, a fair few rescapes and the odd catastrophe I finally managed to get running smoothly with fish that got along and looked, quite frankly, gorgeous. The end list was a wild Rotkeil Sev, Nicaraguan cichlid, Rainbow cichlid (herotilapia multispinosa) and a pair of Geophagus Megasema. I've had them for about 2 years I think, and as a front room/display tank it was a great setup - bright, colourful fish with one or two characters and only mild bickering.

Last week my daughter found the (what I thought was) well hidden plug socket. Filters off, no heat, carnage. The only survivor was the Rainbow cichild. Gutted comes fairly close.

I'm starting to think about restocking but I've not even thought about fishkeeping since I got everything running smoothly with this tank, so my knowledge of different types is pretty rusty. And I'm not really sure what route I want to take - the only thing I'm sure of is that I'm keeping the Rainbow, he's a cracking little character.

So far I've considered two options:

1. Restock with NW cichlids, and go through the guessing game of aggression and personalities to try and get a happy tank. Probably go with some dithers too for aggression dispersal.
2. A large (as in fish size, rather than numbers) community tank. No real idea what to think about stocking wise on that front.

Or option 3 - something different. I've no idea what though.

Whichever I choose I'm not sure where to start. Anyone got any thoughts?

Ive been keeping Malawi Mbuna for about 2 years now. Nothing could pursuade me to keep anything else these days.

Total characters, no fear, in your face, colourfull and breed like crazy. Stunning variety of colours and body shapes.

Ignore the myths about aggression - start them all off the same size and only add small fish to an established colony.

I adore my Rifts and cant sing their praises high enough.
