So I've had Brody for about a week now and we decided to take him to the grandparents today. He went ballistic crying, barking and generally getting extremely stressed, this went on for the whole journey (20mins).
I've read various books about dogs and training but nothing is working.
I've tried to ignore him as well as comfort him (comfort on the way there, ignore on way back).
But now I don't know what to do.
I don't think it's the actual car journey that's upsetting him, it's more the being separated from me. When we picked him up he went mental for 10mins then was quiet/asleep for the next 2hours.
Other than getting a car harness and having him in the passenger cabin, is there any other ideas?

Lots of short journeys on a regular basis , twice per day if possible , to exciting ( for the dog that is ) places . Sooner or later he will look forward to the short journey to the woods / lake what ever and then slowly make longer journeys to other places dogs find entertaining.

This is exactly what I had to do with my Springer and now he loves going out in the car or van . He can do the 350 mile trip down to Cornwall with just the odd rest stop and he's no trouble at all now , sleeps most of the way

He may be getting car sick? Is he panting or salivating at all?

No panting or sweating, just noise. The problem I have he's two weeks from being able to go out for walks, so we try and get together with friends, I'm being told loads of short journeys and ignore him so I'll try that

I'd be interested in tips too. The short journeys to the woods not helping. He is always fine on the way back though!

Moss is about 2 weeks from walks and hates the car too. Every day we take him for a little drive out, followed by a carry around somewhere interesting. He's getting much better in the car now and isn't as phased by loud new noises.

Update.
I've given up for the moment of getting him used to the boot, so I've brought him a car harness and so far so good, although he doesn't like 70 with the roof down.
He nearly ok in the back seat when he his by himself, he just whimpers every so often.
My latest idea is to get him used to travel with his harness and then when he's a bit older and understands that the car means a walk, start again with the boot.
Just incase I have two cars, one estates and a rag top. (I'm not putting him in the boot of the rag top!)

Maybe try a crate in the boot? He may be finding it a bit unsteady on his legs in the back and a crate could just give him that added security.

We have a crate but he doesn't like it either, he'll go into it but if you close the door he goes nuts.

I'll ask my cousin for any suggestions. They breed Visla and show them all over the country so she may have some advice specific to Vislas

Our dog travels in on the back seat with a harness. The other day we had a full car so he had to go in the boot of a hatchback, I was concerned about how he was going to take it. No problem just settled down good as gold.

When he was a couple of months old he used to hate the car but got used to it, so persevere. (a week is nothing btw)

Like you we have a convertible, I can't say he actually enjoys it, but settles down out of the slipstream and seems to tolerate it.
