We are going to see an 8 year old Persian cat who is up for adoption at the weekend. We're new to cats (no pets currently but grew up with dogs, so kind of know what to expect).

We're told he won't want to go outside, which suits us as we're in a London flat (although do have a garden) and will be fine in his own company while we are at work.

Anything we need to know or be aware of?

Fluff, SO MUCH fluff! Get a good vacuum cleaner and something to scrape fluff off the sofa - hacksaw blade is good for this!

Not any more sadly but we had one for sixteen years.

He was a great cat, very good-natured, got on well with the dog at the time for the most part and very tolerant of my younger brother and I (we were kids for a good part of his life). He didn't tend to go very far from the house, seldom beyond the back garden gate and even then never out of sight of the house. I'm given to understand that Persians are known for this trait.

As above, hair is a concern, they really need regular (read; daily) brushing to keep their coats in good condition. Our chap came to like it, he'd sit in front of the cupboard where his brush was kept and if you opened the door he'd take the brush in his mouth by the handle and drag it out.

Bottom line, you get back what you give them in spades. Lovely creatures and great pets, ours is remembered fondly and very much missed.

Here he is, Smeagol we called him, in his younger days:
