Recently moved into a new build, and the puppy is enjoying the garden. Issue is the small patches of yellow grass where the dog goes to the toilet.

Any dog owners got any tricks to combat this?

Reading online I have seen information around treatments for the grass, or tablets you can put in your dogs water to reduce the nitrate in the urine?

Cheers

Watch dog until it pees. Then go out and flood affected area with a hose to dilute urine. Repeat daily.

Dogs and lawns are not compatible.

We just low fenced off a corner of the garden - probs 25sqm and trained the dogs to go there.

Adult males tend to scent mark, splashing it around. Females and puppies tend to dump it all on one spot.

My dog clearly thinks he’s a female or a puppy, though.

Cheers for all the tips. I'll try those dog rocks and then try and use the hose if I get a chance.

The high levels of nitrogen in dog urine come from the breakdown of protein in their diet. It's a feature of carnivores, that's how they work. I'm sceptical of anything you can put in their food or water that claims to alter that. All that nitrogen in their diet has to come out somewhere, that's what their kidneys are for.

A low protein diet, such as one for dogs with impared kidney function may help. Just not good for a healthy dog.

And particularly a growing puppy.

To be sure, lady dogs never stop burning the grass. Our 8 YO Bichon still spoiled the sward until Mrs C came up with an answer.....................

Bought a square metre of artificial grass which she put on the patio and then trained Gracie to pee on that! So far, so good. The 'grass' gets moved to the driveway at car washing time (every week or so) so it never gets smelly.
