Dog ate a sock

1 year old cavapoo so quite small. Swallowed a sock ! He’s been to the vet where they tried to make him vomit but that didn’t work. Vet says to keep an eye for vomiting or bloating. Has anyone else been through this? Will he poo it out? We’ll keep a close watch of course but just wondered what other dog owners have experienced

My mum and dad had a collie/springer x who regularly raided the laundry basket and radiators and ate socks and underpants. Fortunately, he always produced them again (at one end or the other!) but looking back now, he was very lucky not to have a blockage

I knew of a doberman that swallowed a pair of tights. They emerged as a string of sausages in the end, yuk.

Lab ate a sock once. Wasn't pretty when it came out the other end as I had to kind of help him with it. Gross.

My dad's gun dogs used to eat the occasional sock...they always came out the other end intact, so keep an eye, but should be fine.

I don't think this I particularly unusual but do keep an eye. My grandmother had a labrador that did this with monotonous regularity (and indeed occasional hilarity) but it eventually did for it when a rolled up pair of socks went missing and 'failed to emerge'.

Thanks all. Nothing has appeared yet. It was a small ankle sock, pink, with cats on it

We had this with a pair of tights. "Why does the dog have two tails". Nature took its course

My dog loves socks! Always trying to steal them. Thankfully he just chews them up and spits them out!

Cooper's swallowed 4 so far - fortunately always vomited back up the next day (then eaten one of them again when we weren't quick enough)

He's also a fan of electrical tape found in the vicinity of rugby pitches - we have had to assist at the back end once or twice with this

It may well pass, it's surprising what can. You might not notice it either unless you go through every motion very carefully.

On the other hand, a sock can dry out in the bowel and become stuck too. It's a balance of risk whether or not to intervene in cases like this, but unless there's vomiting or other symptoms a wait and see approach is normally okay.

If it passes, take this as a warning and prevent access in the future - just because one sock passes doesn't mean they all will. "But they've always passed okay before" whilst the pet is showing signs of obstruction is a massive eye-roll moment.

My spaniel would eat all sorts as a pup.

Once when he was turning out I couldn't' believe my eyes as there appeared to be a turd bouncing up and down from his arse

Got closer and he was passing an elastic band which was yo yoing the attached dog egg up and down
