Identify caterpillar

Saw this in the garden, so fearing for his safety I laid a piece of wood in his path, which he dutifully mounted allowing me to pop it in the bushes. Hopefully he was a little safer there.



What's this little guy going to be when he grows up?
My googling suggests best guess is elephant hawk moth, but I'm no expert.

Definitely an elephant hawk moth. Used to have loads in my last place. The moths are beautiful.

Yes, it’s an elephant hawk moth. Absolutely awesome things, both as a caterpillar and an adult. I am trying to make my garden more friendly, in the hope that we can get some at home.

That and the privet hawk moth got me to love moths possibly more than butterflies.
