Just landed on the table, never seen one before...

The back legs look like an aquatic species and looks similar to a great diving beetle.

Thanks, certainly looks like one.
I’ve put him in a pile of old damp logs we have in a corner of the garden.

It might have thought that the glass surface was water and had an unexpected hard landing.

It looks very much like a Colorado potato beetle.

Was my first thought but the colours are wrong and the back legs are definitely aquatic.

Yes apparently. Google images brings plenty up that look very similar. Images of a Great diving beetle look different in that not many pics have the stripes.
