What kind of lizard is this?

This is the first lizard I’ve seen in the UK (didn’t want to get too close and scare it off) -



Also, lately I’ve been seeing a lot of slugs, usually one or two now they seem to be everywhere.

How big was it? Sure it’s not a newt rather than a lizard?

definitely rare in some areas, hence being protected, as kids we saw loads in the local pond, happy days

level of protection depends on what kind of newt (and lizards) it may be

As said, it's a newt. You've probably seen a slow worm at some point, which is a lizard, even though it looks like a snake.

I keep finding newts in my garden wall - they are beautiful little creatures with a lovely velvety skin. Salamanders rather than reptiles.
