Professional teeth cleaning - Dog
Discussion
Our Welshie is 4.5 years old. Teeth are generally good but the rear molars are quite brown and the breath is a bit whiffy.
He's a feisty bugger and won't let us near his teeth, Daughter's Scottie, only 6, has gum disease and needs teeth out and I want to avoid that - explains why his breath has been utterly rancid for some time now.
So considering a doggie dental clean for Ted. Anyone had this done and what sort of cost is typical?
Did it do the job, were the teeth nice and clean, was the breath better and how long did they stay that way?
Part of me does not want to subject him to a general but at the same time I would not want him to need teeth out sooner than might be necessary.
Except for brushing, which he won't tolerate, any tips on keeping his teeth clean going foward?
He gets no treats and is fed on grain free Natura twice a day (without mixer). Tried him on raw but he stopped eating it after a fews days

Bookmarking. Our 11year old Karelian Bear Dog had his cleaned at 5 years when he cracked a tooth and had root canal to save it.
As per the above - he's massively independent and won't let us clean his teeth. We've tried everything including meat/cheese paste on the toothbrush but to no avail. He won't eat celery and will pull it out of his food if I try and hide it.
My vets are useless and will be getting changed soon so looking for independent advice/information.

Our Westie has his teeth cleaned by his groomer, using an ultrasonic brush, every visit (5-6 weeks). This top up clean costs £25 a time and IIRC the original first clean was £50.It definitely works, as the vet always comments on how good his teeth are. As he is getting on a bit now (dog, not vet) we`d rather not risk him needing any teeth out and the resulting general anaesthetic that it entails.
Someone on another thread suggested this stuff

We've had ours on it for about 6 months now, it does seem to make a bit of a difference, but hard to say exactly how much.
We also have the issues of bones giving ours the s
ts, but are now limiting them to 10 minute sessions at a time which hopefully will help.

I've heard people swear by raw carrots as a daily snack to clean dog's teeth. No idea if it works but theyre cheaper than most pet chews and healthy too. Plus the dogs eat them without complaint unlike the doggy toothpaste cage fighting routine.
That's what seems to work for my boy. He's 13, fed raw, and daily carrot or two - and always compliments from the vet. Never had any form of 'clean'.
Had our Cocker male's teeth cleaned by the vet about 3 years ago, he's 9 next month, he's another one who hates any kind of close inspection, looking in his ears is bad enough.
Notice his back teeth are getting rough again, wifey (whom he adores) is trying again to clean his teeth, she had some minor success with a brush that sits on a finger, like a thimble, hope we don't have to put him through another vet clean, its not a cost issue which if i recall was about £250.
Tried several different versions of that seaweed stuff supposed to work on plaque, never made a scrap of difference, he's not a bone loving dog, his mum 2.5 years older has lovely teeth, she's on the same diet but enjoyed lamb bones when younger, he'll take a bone from you happily enough but doesn't do anything with it, dogs eh!
Our Viszla is 16 now and sadly only going one way, her teeth though are excellent.

A Vet advised me to give mine carrots, been doing it alongside Plaque Off for a few years now. Their teeth aren’t perfect but they’re ok.
My Westie had hers done at the Vet 4-5yrs ago at a cost of over £300(!) & she reacted badly to the anaesthetic.
