Hi everyone. I know absolutely nothing about dogs so I am hoping to get some sense checking or advice please.

Our new neighbour just moved in with a Dachshund 6 weeks ago, a single Mum. We live in a very quiet semi-rural environment. It is extremely quiet actually, almost eerily so.

Her dog barks a lot. Mostly in 2 situations: when the owner is in, it barks at the slightest opportunity or quite randomly, maybe several times an hour but in fairly short bursts, we can actually also hear the owner scream "stop it".

On Tuesdays the dog is left alone all day and isn't liking it, it sounds distressed as it will bark for perhaps an entire minute, perhaps every 15 minutes. It also howls/whine, it is quite sad to hear.

We obviously approached the owner as soon as they moved in who sent us an apologetic card in which she made several promises about Doggy Day Care or something, calmijg treats, anti bark collar, calming dog diffuser, mote walks, anti bark plug. She said the dog would need a couple of weeks to settle. I have no idea how effective this things are but things have got worse rather than better over the past 2 weeks.

She claimed she never had a problem in her previous house.

Things came to a head today as we politely but firmly complained. The lady is saying she is doing her best and do we have any tips. She said, if not, leave me alone and speak to the Council.

The barking is unpleasant most days and unbearable on Tuesdays.

What should we do? I didn't want to speak to the Council who apparently have a "dog warden" but what choice have I got?

We had to become nosey neighbours and noticed that at the weekend the dog doesn't get out of the flat before 11:00am at the earliest.

We have also spoken to other dog owners today which we met on our bike ride and they say this is inconsiderate and they would be embarrassed if their dog barked.

Any guidance gladly received.

go to the council. Have a diary of times\ days and the impact on you. They will probably do nowt but that should not stop you. Is the flat rented? If so the landlord?

It's a difficult one

We had that, next doors dog would howl all day as soon as she was left alone-it was pitiful and very annoying. I complained to the neighbour who basically told me to get fked. Not much you can do, keep a record, give it to the council and they'll ignore it

A good friend has a similar situation. Lives in a terrace and the neighbours yappy small dog is very audible through the wall.

Each time he leaves the house he simply says ‘Alexa, play yappy dog sounds’. The neighbours at least now have a feel for how ‘hear-through’ the walls are.

I had to check where you live - one of our daughters has some kind of dachshund and that barks a lot. Although it is a bark, not a yap.

Apparently they're very difficult, if not impossible, to train.

Yes it's technically a flat I think, in a house converted into 2 flats although up and down makes it a semi-detached I suppose, ish biglaugh

That's brilliantly but hopefully it won't come to that...

We are in a very similar situation unfortunately. New neighbour moved in over a year ago next door to us ( semi detached ) and had a great wee dog that was no bother at all. Then said dog passed away prematurely and she got a poodle crossed with something else. This dog is the problem ,as it continually barks.
I approached the neighbour twice. The first time everything was quite amicable ,and she agreed that it had to be addressed . However, nothing improved and it came to a head when one afternoon when she was obviously in the house with the dog it barked constantly for 2 to 3 hours. I went back round to ask her to please shut the dog up and enquire why it should be allowed to bark for so long , and I was met with an aggressive mind your own business attitude.
I’ve since reported the issue to the council , which I know will not lead to anything but I’m certainly going to try my best.
What irks me most is the pathetic attitude of the neighbour. We are seen as the bad party for being the complainants. That we should just put up with the noise and not question the issue and just accept the situation. Drives me up the wall this self centered attitude. Nightmare.
