I am currently in Spain & saw something the like of which I have never seen before.

We have all seen sparrows behaving in a "familial/social" way before but this was a bit stronger than that.

I had the misfortune to be driving along when a car coming the other way obviously hit a sparrow.

In the couple of seconds between the car that hit it & the next car following it the sparrow's 2 mates/family members that were flying with it were quite obviously trying to get the injured bird off the road/out of the way, which quite surprised me.

Unfortunately I was not able to retrace my steps to "help" the injured bird out, so please don't judge me in that respect.

Is this normal sparrow behaviour, I guess is my question?

It may have looked like that but I doubt think sparrows have that much sentience, and you're assigning human characteristics to what you saw.

Did they succeed before being flattened by the next car?

You are probably correct it is just what it looked like and, and no, I had passed by then, so couldn't see.
