Do cows attack?
Discussion
This is a bit tongue in cheek, but I'm genuinely curious to know what is the death rate - if any - from people being killed by cows attacking them?
I know somebody who says he was chased by some cows as he took a short cut through a field once. He said it was terrifying. He didn't quite know how to defend himself against a cow if he'd been caught by one of the evil beasts.

I always thought cows were pretty calm creatures - and the Bulls did all the attacking?
From my years of walking though the Peak & Lake District, Wales etc I've never been chased by any of them though, I believe they take some provocation (like having young calves etc and you going too close).

A herd will often decide to trot after you, especially if there are calves.I know somebody who says he was chased by some cows as he took a short cut through a field once. He said it was terrifying. Just run back at them and watch them bottle it in the other direction.
I think most deaths would probably be from being squashed against an immovable object or an accidental trampling than been chased down and torn limb from limb while being thrown around in the air.

Cows can attack but it is unlikely.
When people get 'chased' it's more often than not by juvenile animals. Think of them as big curious puppies. You walk near their group, one takes an interest, you run off, it thinks of it like a game, the rest follow. Normally, if you turn around and confront them they stop dead.
The only time I've been 'attacked' by a cow is when I came between her and her new calf in a pen. I tripped when I tried to get out of the way and she promptly tried to bury her shoulder into my chest and crush me. Luckily help was on hand so I got away unharmed.
They're gentle creatures in general though.

Cows, calves and bulls are 'safer' than corned beef tins and wheelbarrows, but are more 'dangerous' than compost bins and christmas tree lights.

I honestly believe that if any of the cows that i'd 'tipped' had ever caught up with me, I'd be a pretty random statistic now.
They can get really mad.
Careful who you tell about your cow tipping, over in Ireland that's a whole different kind of getting 'close' to a cow. Very strange looks and pervert remarks were made. They can get really mad.
