This may interest the ornothologists amongst you.

I swear this is the truth too smile

I have constantly come across bits of bread in the bird bath.
At first I thought it may have just been dropped by passing birds but, today I found out the real reason.

I was sitting in the living room this afternoon when I saw a crow fly in with a big piece of bread in it's beak. They are very cautious birds so he sat in our tree for a while to make sure it was safe.
He then landed on the bird bath and dropped the bread in the water. After about 10 secs or so, when it was nice and soggy he ate it!

For a bird, I find it amazing that they can even think at that level.

I've seen crows dipping dry bread in puddles of water at the local car wash. It's some distance from human habitation, so unless they've picked up food that the car wash staff have discarded, the crows 'know' where there is a consistent water source, and fly out to it.

Mine too, though without AW.

Crows are reputed to be the most intelligent of birds I believe.

You wouldn't say that if you saw the 2 daft buggers that pecked the crap out of the windows at Tickford for 3 weeks trying to scare off the other birds invading their territory.......

I remember agggeeeessss ago a news article about crows using tools. T'was similar to the common chimpanzee ones, using a bent piece of wire in their beak to hook food out of a container.

Collective noun is "murder". A murder of crows - says it all really.

It is also entertaining to see the flock of seagulls flying around like idiots looking for food while the crows all sit on the ground under the gulls watching where the gulls go...

Anyone who has ever tried to shoot them on a farm will attest that a lot of the time it feels like the crows are the ones playing with you...

There is a video on ted.com where someone explains experiments they ran with crows, the goal being that they'd collect rubbish and litter after some kind of event and deposit special bins in exchange for treats. Pretty impressive stuff.

Normal birds are pretty clever as well, they know that a quirrel is harmless but a cat is not.

We started putting out a jar of peanut butter under the bird table about 6 months ago and now the crows fly down, get the bread, drop to the grass and drop the bread, get a good dollop of peanut butter on the end of a flight feather and liberally spread it across the bread. They then eat it.

We're thinking of leaving out a toaster, a knife and some marge as well and seeing if they can learn to make sandwiches.
