Lily the Black Bear - petition to protect collared bears

Last year the BBC made a fantastic 3 part nature documentary 'The Bear Family & Me' with Gordon Buchanan. This followed the year in the life of the black bears Lily and her cub Hope and how they survived. Also you'll know the good work done by the team that monitors bears in Minnesota and the distress caused by the hunters that will shoot collared bears.

"Dr Lynn Rogers and his team at the North American Bear Center, Ely, MN is working to win protection for radio-collared bears wearing bright ribbons in Minnesota. They need protection for this September, when the hunting season starts."

I saw this program. I get hunters hunt but why can't they respect the guidelines set re: not shooting collared bears.

Today the hunting season starts for 6 weeks. 100's of American Black Bears will be slaughtered all in the name of fun/sport

I say 'hunting' but not one of these bears will be killed by a brave hunter with nothing but a loin cloth and bare hands to track and fight to the death. No, they'll all be wearing gay camouflage, hiding 50ft up a tree and shooting from 300yds at a bait trap

Hopefully Lily, Hope & Faith will get through, but as they cannot get a collar on Hope, she's in danger.

I know, I saw the photo of Hope after they had managed to get the collar on her but it didnt stay on for long. Im really really hope that all of the radio-collared bears make it through the hunting season. It is such a cruel and pointless thing to do especially to such a beautiful animal.

One elderly bear has had 37 cubs over the many years of her life, all but one have been shot.

The researchers were walking with the bears yesterday as its illegal to shoot a bear that is with a researcher. However they probably wont be able to keep this up for the whole 6 weeks.Hunting black bears is a utterly stupid thing to do. Lily et al have taught people so much about their true nature and life and they are repaid by being at risk of being shot for a trophy. Disgusting.

So it looks as though the worst is true, Hope has been missing a week now and a hunter claims to have shot a bear in the area she was last seen.

Complete and utter bds. I hope they are wrong but I have tears in my eyes knowing it's likely to be the worst case scenario.

Hope was a unique bear her fighting spirit got her through her early days where many would have perished, this is not the way she should have died
