LAS VEGAS or NEW YORK? For a special weeks holiday
Discussion
NYC for me every time. They're totally different experiences though so hard to compare.
What I will say is that a week in NYC will cost you a pretty penny. If you want to base yourself on Manhattan for a week it's difficult to get a cheap hotel and even hostels aren't cheap. You can make it a bit cheaper by staying in one of the cheaper boroughs such as Brooklyn but depending on your interests you could be spending allot of time travelling on the Subway. I’ve been to NYC several times now and there are still plenty of things I haven’t done. However the cost does balance out although NYC is more expensive, the flight is shorter and less expensive.
If I had a week I’d possibly look into visiting Niagara Falls or exploring the surrounding areas for a couple of days. Atlantic City isn’t too far to drive either but obviously nowhere near the same scale as Vegas. Of course there’s plenty to occupy yourself with for a week, just depends on your budget.
You could of course do both, internal flights aren’t too expensive although the flight from NYC to LV is about 5 hours from memory. Chances are if you were to go to Vegas you’d most likely have to fly via one of the major hub airports anyhow which JFK or Newark are.
When I first travelled to the US I did NYC, SF and a week in Vegas. After hearing about Vegas I expected Vegas to be the highlight of my trip and although I enjoyed it, it was definitely the ‘lowlight’ of the entire trip. For me it’s just too big and busy to enjoy for more than a few days.

I'd say for Vegas being single is a must although it depends what you want from a holiday.
Vegas is all about the shopping in the day and drinking at night. Fine dining is touted but TBH I've found once you stray from American strong points the food is somewhat ropey.
Still, the first night Vegas buzz is amazing.

I love Vegas, been there 4 times, and got married there, but 4 days is enough before I get tired of the place. New York is also great, but as others have said, expensive to stay there.
How about a few days in Vegas, and then drive across Death Valley to San Francisco, or do a bit of Route 66 with a really flash hire car or Harley-D?
