I'm hoping to fly to Cincinatti in October to see some friends.

I will hopefully be going from Heathrow.

I wouldn't fly with BA if you paid me because nowadays you can never be sure when they'll go on strike.
I won't fly with American Airlines after their rather lax security at New York last year (in Heathrow my passport was checked at least 4 times, in JFK it was glanced at once).

Currently leaning towards a KLM flight with a stopover in Detroit, I believe the first leg is with Delta Airlines and the 2nd leg with KLM themselves? Anyone got any experience with either airline? Or with Detroit as an airport?

Failing that, anyone recommend a good airline to fly to Cinci with (economy class)?

Airports are airports, I'm sure Detroit will have the usual collection of shops and bars.

I'd recommend seeing if a direct flight to a US hub, followed by an internal flight on one of their budget companies (JetBlue, Southwest spring to mind) works out cheaper. They are pretty good for internal flights (try to get a seat next to a fat person, they have to buy two seats and it means you can spread out a bit).

Either that or ride the Greyhound. It's an experience, to be sure.

KLM flights in the US will be partner airlines not KLM themselves, they were partners with NWA who were bought by Delta

My search results for them through Gatwich all feature a stop in Atlanta?
