Morning all
Me and a couple of mates are doing the Hull-Zeebrugge thing on Thursday night and then riding our bikes over to Ypres for Friday and going visiting some mates in Amiens in France on Saturday.

I've visited Ypres a few times over the years and it's a nice place to sit in the square and drink beer. Can anyone advise on interesting stuff (there are bound to be *loads* of WW1 related things to see)? Obviously watching the last post at the Menin Gate will be on the list.

Cheers!

The Wipers musuem in the town square is good if you are interested in museums etc- perhaps a bit dry and non-interactive if you don't though- it has a LOT of information.

Go to the tourist information in Ypres and get a map of the battlefields as a good starting place- for me Tyne Cot was mind blowing, as was Sanctuary wood- try and go early to see Snactuary wood as you will get the place to yoruself without school kids- its a very very odd place (and doesn't really look like a popular musuem).

Some of the smaller cemetaries are really touching- they don't have the big "cemetary" feel and feel like very personal places- my great great grandfather is buried in one of these, and i had tears pouring down my face looking at his grave and what people had written on others too.

Also stop and see the German graveyards- a very different feeling to the allied ones (the WW2 ones are just the same- the whole cemetary feels like shame- i can't describe it any better- makes you very sad that the dead should rest like that). The nearest of these will perhaps be Langemark.

Certainly not a battlefielfs afficianado, but go to the Ypres rally most years and always stop off to see a couple of smaller cemetaries- its important to me that someone goes to commemorate all these people that fought so senselessly.

I did the Sanctuary museum about 15 years ago - might be worth a revisit. I've gone to see loads of WW1 stuff (having lived in Amiens it's very familiar) in the intervening period. Hope my fellow travellers enjoy.
