Going to Spain on Wednesday and just realised I can't find my E111 Card. Looking at E111 site, says renewal takes at least 7 days. Anybody got any ideas please?

Yes, got the travel insurance, just wondered if I'd need the E111 as well.

The E111 card just entitles you to free equivalent NHS insurance and as I understand it yiou have to have it on you if the worst happens. It's not a compulsory thing so I wouldn't sweat it.

Have you phoned them? You can get a PRC pretty quickly.

Didn't I read somewhere that you do not even need to have the card as long as you could prove you lived in an EU country/paid taxes etc?

I think there might be an emergency number you can call when abroad which links to the EHIC (new name for E111) people. Probably worth googling it etc...

Apologies if I am wrong on the above but I was in a sweat a few years ago when mine had ran out and I needed to apply for a new one sharpish and I seem to recall I had a 'panic over' moment when I had looked into it.

Possibly the phone number in my link above?! biggrin

If you've not got an EHIC then the health provider is entitled to charge you. Not everywhere does, but you're better with your EHIC than without.

Mrs Puggit visited a French A&E department a few years back, sans EHIC card. The total bill came to €22, including prescription, so in the end we couldn't be bothered to retro-claim and just paid it off.

Your passport doesn't prove residency, so it's dependent on hospital policy whether they charge you sans EHIC or not.

Having an EU passport means you can live anywhere in the EU. For example the large number of Poles that live in the UK. That doesn't mean that now they live here Poland still has to pay for them if they need healthcare in the EU.

Having an EU passport does not mean you'll get free healthcare at any hospital in the EU.
I've warned you!

(PS - I do this for a living btw, so I do know what I'm talking about).
